Therefore, it is said that from beginningless time, it has been close at hand, and where are these located? They exist in the nature of mind, the stainless realm, which has also existed continuously from beginningless time. Furthermore, the way to illustrate that sentient beings possess the Tathagatagarbha through metaphors is: Nagarjuna said in the 'In Praise of Dharmadhatu': 'If one does not know everywhere, one wanders in the three realms. In all sentient beings, the one who constantly abides, I prostrate to the Dharmadhatu. That which is the cause of samsara, having purified it, purity is nirvana, the Dharmakaya is also thus. Just as when mixed with milk, the essence of butter is invisible, so too when mixed with afflictions, the Dharmadhatu is also invisible. Just as when all the milk is refined, the essence of butter becomes stainless, so too when all the afflictions are refined, the Dharmadhatu becomes extremely stainless. Just as the precious lapis lazuli, is always bright at all times, but when it is located inside a stone, its light is not clear. Likewise, the Dharmadhatu, which is extremely stainless, is obscured by afflictions, its light is not clear in samsara, its light becomes clear in nirvana. The stainless sun and moon are also obscured by five obscurations such as clouds, fog, smoke, Rahu's face, and dust. Likewise, the mind of clear light is obscured by five obscurations such as desire, hatred, the mirror of anger, agitation, and doubt.' And so on, many scriptures have also explained it. Thirdly, in the 'Uttaratantra', it says: 'Attachment, hatred, and delusion, as well as their accompanying afflictions, violent habitual tendencies, and what is abandoned by the paths of seeing and meditation, the nine impure stains, the lotus bud and other metaphors, well explain the stains, the distinctions of the near afflictions are beyond hundreds of thousands.' Thus, just as a lotus flower, is temporarily pleasing because of its beauty, but later withers and becomes unpleasant, similarly is the latent tendency of desire; just as a bee, when others take away its honey, stings with fierce hatred, similarly is the latent tendency of hatred; just as the essence of rice and so on is obscured by husks and so on,

Just as it is seen, similarly, the habitual tendencies of ignorance lie dormant. Thus, the three stains of habitual tendencies that cause rebirth in the two upper realms, and just as a decaying, unclean corpse is of a nature that is unpleasant and frightening, similarly, the three poisons that cause the desire realm to arise intensely. Just as a treasure buried beneath the ground of a house is obscured and hidden by much earth, so that the poor householder does not recognize it, similarly, that which exists in the continuum of a noble Arhat, covered by the earth of the habitual tendencies of ignorance, which is the cause of the body of the nature of mind. Just as the sprouts and trunks of trees gradually grow, and the husks of the seeds are gradually cut away, similarly, that which exists in the continuum of a Hinayana trainee, which is to be abandoned by what is to be abandoned by seeing. Just as a rotten garment is the remainder of what is coarse and worn out, and is obscured by a nature that is stained, that which exists in the continuum of a Hinayana trainee, which is to be abandoned by what is to be abandoned by meditation. Just as a woman's womb obscures what is to be seen, similarly, that which is contained by the continuum of a Bodhisattva abiding on the impure seven grounds. Just as a golden image covered with mud can be purified with little effort, the stains contained by the continuum of a Bodhisattva abiding on the pure three grounds. Thus, these nine stains are fully explained by the nine examples, such as the lotus calyx. The obscuration of the Tathagatagarbha is the division of eighty-four thousand sheaths of afflictions that are close by, and if it is further divided, the divisions will become endless. The fourth is: Previously: These stains, with children and, Arhats, students, intelligent ones, Gradually four and one and, Two and two are impure. Thus, from these nine stains, such as the habitual tendencies of desire, the first four cause ordinary children, the fifth causes noble Arhats, the sixth and seventh cause Hinayana trainees, the eighth and ninth cause intelligent Bodhisattvas of the ten grounds, these, existing in the continuums of each of them, obscure the naturally pure realm of reality in sequence.
