For these three Uposathas of averting transgressions and averting disputes, all the preliminary, main, and concluding rituals are the same as before, except that in the request, "fifteenth Uposatha" is replaced with something like "auspicious Uposatha." When stating the time, for example, like "the eighteenth day of the tenth month of the Tibetan calendar," it is said, "Three days of the first month of early winter have passed, and one month and twenty-seven days remain." Only the manner of stating it is different. Second, regarding the basic ritual of the summer retreat, the preliminary is: beforehand, the temple should be cleaned, offerings should be arranged, and if cushions and other items for the dwelling can be provided, they should be prepared in advance. If it is the early summer retreat, then it is on the fifteenth day of the sixth month of the Tibetan calendar, when the middle summer month—the month of the upper part of Mercury—ends. If it is the later summer retreat, then it is on the fifteenth day of the seventh month of the Tibetan calendar, when the late summer month—the month of ripening wheat—ends. After completing the Uposatha as before, one or more monks responsible for providing lodging should be appointed immediately. The procedure is as follows: the officiant asks, "Venerable monk named so-and-so, are you willing to provide summer lodging for the Sangha?" The answer is, "I am willing." Then, the officiant says, "Since he is willing, we will appoint someone to provide lodging through a request and two karmas. Please all members of the Sangha follow the procedure and first focus on the karma of the request. Venerable members of the Sangha, please listen: If the monk named so-and-so is willing to provide summer lodging for the Sangha, and if it is the appropriate time for the Sangha and it is permissible, then please let the Sangha permit it. The Sangha appoints the monk named so-and-so to provide lodging. The monk named so-and-so provides summer lodging for the Sangha. This is the request. Please focus on the statement including the conclusion. The Sangha requests: The monk named so-and-so is willing to provide summer lodging for the Sangha. Therefore, if the Sangha is to appoint the monk named so-and-so to provide lodging, then those venerable ones who can tolerate the appointment of the monk named so-and-so to provide lodging, please remain silent. Those who cannot tolerate it, please speak up."

After the Sangha has approved and permitted, the Sangha appoints the Bhikshu named so-and-so to allocate residences. If no one speaks against it, it is taken as approval. Having said this, the Bhikshu thus appointed should also allocate residences and distribute wooden sticks. If there is no need to allocate residences, then the procedure for appointing the distributor of wooden sticks is as follows: As stated in the 'Pacification of Disputes,' the officiant asks: Bhikshu named so-and-so, are you willing to distribute wooden sticks to the Sangha? If he says yes, then instead of saying 'allocate summer residences' as before, say 'distribute wooden sticks to the Sangha,' and then recite the conclusion of the action with two requests. Then, he takes smooth and straight wooden sticks, about a cubit long, fumigated with fragrant substances, wraps them with white cloth on the lid of a box, and places them at the end of the elders. He himself stands up, joins his palms, and recites the summer precepts: Venerable Sangha, please listen. In this auspicious monastery named so-and-so, the precepts to be observed are: not to transgress the four practices of a renunciate, to diligently study the ten practices, not to create disputes within the summer Sangha, not to mention offenses, not to perform punitive actions, to repair dilapidated residences and walls, not to greet the dawn outside the boundary without being blessed, not to place bare feet on the Sangha's common cushions, not to discard rinsing water in the Sangha's monastery, and so on. Whoever among you is willing to abide by these precepts and reside in this place, please take a wooden stick. None of you should create disputes within the summer Sangha. Whoever among you knows something, please speak up. Whoever among you will create disputes for the Sangha during the summer, the Sangha will later examine carefully. Having said this, he sits down in his seat. Then, the officiant says: Those who have accepted the wooden sticks and promised to reside for the summer,
