Now, please let the Sangha dedicate themselves to the task of consulting together regarding the summer retreat. Venerable Sangha, please listen. Now that the time for the Sangha's summer retreat is approaching, which is the fifteenth day of the middle or small month of summer. If the Sangha deems it timely and permissible, please grant your approval. Let the Sangha take the counting sticks today and vow to enter the summer retreat tomorrow morning. This is the request. Then, the distributor first takes the counting stick representing the Buddha, which is wrapped with silk and flowers, holding it at both ends with the middle and ring fingers, touching it to the crown of the head, and says, "This is taken by our teacher, the perfectly complete Buddha." Having said this, it is offered before the Buddha image. Then, it is taken to each of the proctors, the place is indicated, and it is distributed in order. The recipients also do not speak, but rise halfway from their seats, take their respective counting sticks, and gently place them in their laps. The counting sticks for fully ordained monks (bhikshus) and novices (shramaneras) are: "This is for novice so-and-so." They are taken by their respective preceptors and teachers. Finally, indicating the place, the stick is taken, saying, "This is for the deity who permanently resides in this temple." Then, the bhikshus and shramaneras are gathered separately and counted. The distributor stands up, joins their palms, and says, "Venerable Sangha, please listen. In this temple called Auspicious, so many bhikshus have taken the counting sticks." It should be made known. The response from those present, saying "taken," is considered incorrect because it comes from the "Explanation of Differences in Defeat" and has no source. Although it is not briefly stated that "this novice took it himself," it is practiced according to the writings of Chimchen. After that is the allocation of dwellings. Generally, dwellings and bedding, etc., that are permanent have already been allocated. However, for newcomers, it is necessary to reallocate, and moreover, if there are things to allocate, they should be allocated separately, that is, the administrator holds the temple's door latch and key. First, sitting before the permanent resident, he says, "Preceptor or Acharya or permanent resident, this temple is equipped with clothing and other necessities, please enjoy." Starting from the elders down to the last of the novices.
