Until then, the doors and keys of their respective dwellings should be handed over. The recipients should also accept them silently, like a begging bowl. Then, the bedding should also be distributed in order, saying: Please enjoy this set of cushions in accordance with the summer customs. After the distribution is completed, the giver should stand at the end of the Sangha, join his palms, and say: Venerable Sangha, please listen. None of you should use the Sangha's dwelling without permission. Do not use what is not allowed to be used. Do not use what is defiled. After making this known, the summer retreat should be understood through the same conduct. Venerable Sangha, please listen. Tomorrow's umbrella of the Sangha will rely on the patron so-and-so, or if not specifically mentioned, on the multitude of beings including gods, humans, nagas, and yakshas, as well as the attendant so-and-so, and the village of the practice area so-and-so, and the cook so-and-so, or these individually mentioned, and will be promised to stay in summer retreat. Say this. Then, after dedicating merit, making aspirations, and offering auspicious prayers, it is concluded, and this is the introductory ritual for the summer preparations. Next is the actual ritual of vowing the summer retreat: On the morning of the sixteenth of the following day, it is said that each person vows their own dwelling, along with the bedding, in front of the Bhikshu. However, nowadays it is customary to gather and perform the ritual, so the Ghandi is struck to gather. Now is the time to vow the early summer retreat. Offer tormas to the owner of the monastery and the third lineage and the local deities. Then, sit squatting in front of a Bhikshu who has not yet reached the number of the Sangha, join your palms, and say: Venerable one, please listen. I, named so-and-so, in this dwelling including the inner chamber, in order to repair the damage and cracks of the dwelling, vow to stay in the early summer retreat for three months. I am here in summer retreat, and my place of summer retreat is here. Repeat this three times, and then act virtuously. If it is the later summer retreat, then change it to the later summer retreat for three months. If there are patrons, etc., then after "in order to repair the cracks" add: The patron named so-and-so, and the attendant named so-and-so.

Saying "this is the dwelling place" and "this is the village for practice" and "this is the attendant," thus adding "the first three months of retreat." If there is no particular place, one can also observe the retreat by vowing, "I will stay here for three months." Even if one does not promise to stay, it is still considered a retreat if one is not allowed to leave. That is how it is said. So, after promising to observe the retreat, how to accomplish the tasks: Examining whether one returns to the dwelling place after half a month, etc., are the tasks of the appointed person. The common tasks of the Sangha are to diligently engage in reading, listening, contemplation, and meditative practice. Abandoning things like turning the bowl over, which are many things and many tasks. Abandoning the causes of quarrels, discussing transgressions, distributing wealth, and engaging in disputes. Protecting by repairing leaks in the temple, etc. Not staying overnight outside the boundary. However, if it is necessary to stay overnight outside the boundary due to a Dharma-related need, one should go after blessing oneself in order not to break the retreat. Among these, except for the last six days of the retreat, the ritual for blessing oneself for one to seven days from an individual perspective is: Inside the boundary, sit squatting in front of a monk who possesses the nine qualities, and say: Venerable ones, please listen. I, named so-and-so, in this place including the inner boundary, since promising to stay for the first three months of retreat, I, named so-and-so, for the sake of certain Dharma-related (matters), will go outside the boundary for seven days, and will return before then, please bless me. I am staying here for the retreat, and my retreat place is here. Say this three times and make a good request. Similarly, depending on whether it is one day, two days, etc., change the wording accordingly. If it is necessary to go for Dharma matters such as the Sangha, which cannot be completed in seven days, then after obtaining permission from the Sangha for forty days, go after blessing oneself for the number of days needed between eight and forty days. The procedure for this is: If it is for the Sangha, the administrator asks: Venerable one, do you wish to go outside the boundary after blessing yourself for forty days for the sake of the Sangha? He also replies: I wish to. Nyak says that if it is for oneself, there is no need to ask.
