Because of the antidote to laziness, the desire to meditate arises, and abiding in this is the effort of diligence, the cause of arising desire is faith, and the fruit of diligence is that the three doors are completely tamed, and through familiarization, one obtains workability, these are four. The antidote to forgetting the object is the mindfulness of not forgetting the meaning of the words, the awareness of observing whether dullness and excitement arise, and when they arise, the antidote to abandoning them is manifest activity, and for an antidote that is too strong, one does not apply equanimity, these are eight. Thus, when generating desire, the samadhi of desire, which is the basis of miraculous power with the mind focused on one point; when initiating effort and diligence, the samadhi of diligence, which is the basis of miraculous power with the mind focused on one point; when the mind is fully placed, the samadhi of workability of mind, which is the basis of miraculous power; when the mind is fully held, the samadhi of practice on it, which is the basis of miraculous power, these are four. The fourth is the five faculties, whose essence is: abiding in the nature of the proximate cause that empowers the noble path. That is, the faculty of faith, which trusts and desires enlightenment; the faculty of diligence, which engages in the practice of Bodhisattvas; the faculty of mindfulness, which does not forget the objects and aspects of what has been heard; the faculty of samadhi, in which the mind does not wander in tranquility; and the faculty of wisdom, which fully discriminates the dharmas of insight, these are five. Thus, in the Ornament it says: Enlightenment practice and supreme hearing, tranquility, insight, faith, etc., should be known as the basis, because of the order of accomplishing the meaning. Thus. The fifth is the five powers, the above five become powers, thereby weakening their opposing factors, as the Ornament says: Because the opposing factors are extremely weak, these are called powers. Thus, the power of faith that destroys disbelief, the power of diligence that destroys laziness, the power of mindfulness that destroys forgetfulness, the power of samadhi that destroys distraction, and the power of wisdom that destroys ignorance, these are five. The sixth is the seven branches of enlightenment, that is, the mindfulness of not forgetting the object and aspect is the perfect branch of enlightenment, like a wheel, the dharma that destroys the characteristics of conceptual thought.
