It is like a part where life ends. What is that? It belongs to the category of desire realm gods who obstruct undefiled virtue, like a son of the gods who obstructs the practice of the sacred Dharma. The latter three contradict each other, but the latter three do not contradict the first, because these three belong to the category of the first. In the *Śrāvakabhūmi* it says: What are the four Māras? The Māra of the aggregates, the Māra of the afflictions, the Māra of death, and the Māra of the son of the gods. Among these, the Māra of the aggregates is the aggregates with outflows. The Māra of the afflictions is the afflictions that operate in the three realms. The Māra of death is the time of death for beings in their respective classes of beings. The Māra of the son of the gods is so called because it causes beings to truly transcend the Māra of the aggregates, the afflictions, and death. It is when sons of the gods, born in the desire realm and having obtained power, come near in order to obstruct virtuous Dharma and cause distraction. This is called the Māra of the son of the gods. So it is said. Secondly, it is established as four from the perspective of obstructing the attainment of the fruit of remaining and non-remaining Nirvāṇa by abiding for a long time and obtaining special qualities of non-negligence. Thirdly, it is called Māra because it obstructs the attainment of the state of immortality. Fourthly, there are two systems: the system of the Śrāvakayāna school and the system of the common Mahāyāna. The first is that, as for this teacher, at the foot of the Bodhi tree, he subdued the god Māra with the weapon of loving-kindness; at dawn that day, he subdued the affliction Māra with the diamond-like samādhi; in Vaiśālī, he blessed the Saṃskāras of life and subdued the death Māra; in the supreme city of Roots, he entered Nirvāṇa without remainder and subdued the Māra of the aggregates. This is the accepted view. Secondly, there are two ways of subduing: by the Śrāvakas and by the Mahāyāna. The first is that the Māra of the son of the gods is subdued from the path of seeing of the Lesser Vehicle, because there one obtains the direct realization of the Three Jewels in one's own continuum, because one directly realizes the reality of the Four Noble Truths. Having attained the Arhat of the Lesser Vehicle, the Māra of the afflictions is subdued, because the afflictions of the three realms are completely abandoned. The Arhat of the Lesser Vehicle who has attained the peak of the fourth Dhyāna subdues death

Because he has conquered the maras, therefore, according to the explanation in the Treasury Treatise, he has the power to choose to abandon or accept life. Having attained nirvana without remainder, he has conquered the skandha mara, because there he has completely abandoned the truth of suffering. The second case is that there is also the conquering of the four maras on the Mahayana path of accumulation, because the Mahayana practitioner on the path of accumulation who has previously realized nirvana without remainder is like that. Furthermore, on the Mahayana path of joining, he has conquered the deva mara, because there he has gained the ability to directly realize the Three Jewels in his own mindstream. From the first ground onwards, he has conquered the klesha mara and the death mara, because there he has abandoned birth and death in samsara under the control of karma and kleshas. The skandha mara can possibly continue up to the seventh ground and below, because the similar body of a Bodhisattva on the path of joining, which arises from karma and kleshas, exists up to that point. Even without having gone through the lower paths, it is possible to conquer the maras from the first ground onwards, because a Bodhisattva abiding in the subsequent attainment of the first ground abandons the skandhas arising from karma and kleshas and takes on a mind-made body. Having attained the eighth ground, he necessarily conquers the maras, because there, even without choosing to abandon or accept life, he can transform his previous contaminated body into an uncontaminated one by the power of having gained mastery over non-conceptual wisdom. Therefore, the key is that abandoning impure, contaminated aggregates depends on the cycle of birth and death, and that at the time of attaining the realization of the eighth ground, even without choosing to abandon or accept life, one can transform the contaminated aggregates into uncontaminated ones through the power of inner realization, without depending on the cycle of birth and death. The literal meaning is: the wisdom of the eighth ground, possessing the quality of surpassing enemies,
