These are two meanings. First, there are three combinations: the combination of samsara and nirvana being equal, the combination of pure lands, and the combination of skillful means. The characteristics of these three are, in order: the yoga of pure lands, which involves meditating on the purity of wisdom, where samsara and nirvana are without inherent existence and are equal, and meditating on the realm of beings and environment as being purely vast and pure. Classification: two combinations of pure lands, beings and environment. The yoga of pure lands, which involves knowing the appropriate and inappropriate times to manifest the special qualities of skillful means. Classification: the combination of skillful means that transcends enemies, the non-abiding, the benefiting others, the unique, the non-attachment, the non-objectifying, the signless, the wishless, the irreversible reason, the immeasurable skillful means, and ten others. The boundary is: it exists from the eighth ground upwards. The bodhisattvas below the seventh ground are said to have monks who are learning, and also monks who are not learning about pure lands. These three combinations are said to be cultivated and meditated upon after arising in the minds of non-learners. The Dharma obtained by the assembly of learners is an effort to obtain Buddhahood. The reason for obtaining Buddhahood is: samsara and nirvana are equal. And, in the Great Commentary, it says: Therefore, in order to clarify the characteristics of the non-learning Sangha, it is necessary to explain the equality of samsara and nirvana. This is the second, there are two meanings derived from the combination of samsara and nirvana being equal, and the combination of skillful means. First, there are two: the nature of samsara and nirvana, and refuting objections to it. First, there are four: the way of illustrating with examples, the determination of the essence, the meaning of equality, and the reasoning of no self-nature. The first is: samsara is like a dream, and nirvana is illustrated by the sound of daytime. The sutra says: These are illusory appearances, like experiencing a dream. When awakened from the sleep of ignorance, all of samsara is without object. The second is: the truth of suffering that arises from the power of one's own cause, afflictions, which is contained by the state of not having abandoned afflictions, is the characteristic of samsara. Classification: there are two samsaras contained by the environment and beings. The boundary is the last moment of the path of meditation of the Lesser Vehicle, and the Great Vehicle.

It is between the path of joining and the supreme Dharma. It is the characteristic of the non-learning individual liberation Nirvana that has abandoned the afflictive obscurations. Divided, there are two types of Nirvana, the great and small vehicles. The third is that both samsara and Nirvana are without inherent existence, and are equal in the union free from elaboration. Fourth, there are two: establishing that samsara is without inherent existence, and establishing Nirvana therein. First, samsara is without inherent existence, because it only appears as something to be abandoned in the minds of the unenlightened and confused, but it is not established in reality. As it says in the Root Wisdom: If actions are samsara, if they are permanent, they do not revolve; if they are impermanent, they also do not become samsara. The same applies to sentient beings. Second, Nirvana, which is liberation from samsara, is without inherent existence, because the binding samsara is without inherent existence. For example, just as there is no liberation from iron fetters if there is no binding by iron fetters. As it says in the Root Wisdom: How can actions enter Nirvana? How can sentient beings enter Nirvana? Neither of these is possible. Second, in response to the accusation that there is no action, there are four: uncertain, contradictory to scripture, and excessive refutations. First, there are accusation and answer. First, there is the object of dispute, the person who disputes, and the manner of dispute. First, when explaining the nature of the path of joining, it is disputed that dreams and daytime are non-conceptual, thus admitting that samsara and Nirvana are without inherent existence. Second, in the actual teaching of the Sutra, although Shariputra asked Subhuti a question and answer of dispute, Shariputra is not the prior speaker of this side, because the prior speaker of this side admits that the path of action is inherently established, and Shariputra does not have such wrong views. Therefore, the realist is the prior speaker of this side, because in order to reverse the wrong views of clinging to truth in the minds of realists, the structure of accusation and answer is taught here. Third, the state of daytime is the subject, it is entailed that there is no path of virtuous or non-virtuous action, because it is without inherent existence. For example, like a dream. Second, there are two answers: an uncertain pervasion and an unestablished example. First, the pervasion is uncertain for the argument of the dispute.
