Meditating with the method of making the path exceedingly superior. The reason for meditating in stages so that realization increases from higher to higher is to fully understand that all three – application, seeing, and meditation – are complete. Secondly, it exists. In the context of all aspects, the commentary on the categories, etc., explains those three from the perspective of meditating by condensing the aspects of the three wisdoms into the three unborn ones. In the Great Commentary, it says: Why are the definitive aspects of each realization explained? It should be said: By the distinctions of meditating on all aspects, paths, and bases.

The nature of the characteristics of non-retrogression has four aspects. First, there are three: entity, definition, and classification. First, there are two: determining the minimum boundary, and identifying the subject to be established as non-retrogressive as stated here. First, there are two: the actual and the examination of whether or not the sign of non-retrogression has been obtained. The first is: there is also non-retrogression from the Mahayana accumulation path, because it is impossible for a Mahayana lineage-determined accumulation path practitioner with sharp faculties of mind and action to enter the Hinayana path. However, it is not considered to have obtained the sign of non-retrogression, because one cannot primarily show others the special behavior of body and speech that corresponds to one's own realization, so it is difficult for a person with a lower realization than oneself to be certain of non-retrogression. Therefore, there is a commonality from the determination of the boundary of obtaining the sign of non-retrogression. As stated in the Sutra: "A Bodhisattva who possesses those aspects, those signs, and those characteristics should be known as non-retrogressive." Those are also obtained by those of uncertain lineage, those with sharp faculties on the path of application, those with intermediate faculties on the impure grounds, and all Bodhisattvas on the pure grounds. The second is: if one possesses a special realization that makes it impossible to enter the lower path through thought and action, then it is pervasive with non-retrogression from unsurpassed enlightenment, and the ability to primarily show other trainees the special behavior that is consistent with the realization of one's own continuum is the meaning of obtaining the sign of non-retrogression. The second is: in general, Bodhisattvas are of three types: those who are certain to enter the Hinayana path, those who are certain to be of the Mahayana lineage, and those of uncertain lineage. The first of these is not to be taken as the subject to be established as non-retrogressive as stated here, because it cannot be established as non-retrogressive by signs. Second, non-retrogression by the power of lineage is: as stated in the Ornament: "Before application, there is compassion, patience, and faith, and also correct practice in virtue, it should be known as the sign of lineage." Thus, possessing the four causes that awaken the lineage, one cannot be led into the lower path. Non-retrogression by the power of realization is: the wisdom that primarily realizes through the practice of emptiness

The power of uniting excellence and great compassion makes it impossible to abandon the realization of the Great Vehicle. This is also called internal retention. These should not be mainly regarded as the objects of the teaching here, because the doubt of turning back is small. Therefore, the sharp-witted practitioner of the path of joining of uncertain lineage, and the intermediate bodhisattva residing on the impure ground, should be mainly regarded as the objects of the teaching here to prove non-retrogression, because they have a greater doubt of turning back, and can prove non-retrogression by signs. Secondly, the characteristic of the irreversible Sangha of the Great Vehicle person who cannot enter the Lesser Vehicle path through the two aspects of thought and action. Here, the characteristic of the bodhisattva who has obtained the sign of irreversibility in his own mind is directly indicated. Thirdly, there are three types of irreversible bodhisattvas: those on the path of joining, those on the path of seeing, and those on the path of meditation. The characteristics in order are: Who cannot enter the Lesser Vehicle path through the two aspects of thought and action? Which bodhisattva abides in the Great Vehicle's decisive part? The bodhisattva who abides on the first ground. Which one is the bodhisattva who subsequently abides in the manifest realization? Differentiating them, there are two types: those who have obtained the sign of irreversibility and those who have not. Secondly, there are four types of irreversibility, from mere enlightenment to unsurpassed enlightenment, from the transcendental ground to the effortless ground. The first starts from the path of accumulation, the second starts from the path of joining of the Great Vehicle, the third starts from the first ground, and the fourth starts from the eighth ground. Among them, what is indicated here is the second, which is established from the perspective of unsurpassed enlightenment, based on whether or not there is retrogression. Thirdly, there are two types of irreversibility based on the power of thought and action. The first has two aspects: nature and boundary. The first is: having great compassion focused on sentient beings, and a special intention that does not even have the slightest doubt of falling away from conventional bodhicitta. The second is: it can also be obtained from the sharp-witted practitioner of the path of accumulation, for those of uncertain lineage, the sharp-witted practitioner of the path of joining, those above the intermediate level of the impure ground, and all bodhisattvas residing on the pure ground can obtain it. In "Essence of Moonlight" it says: 'Here is the most intelligent one,' etc.
