For example, it is said in the sutra, "If one destroys the two pippalīs, along with their retinue and surrounding, that person will become pure." The third is, in order to accommodate some lazy individuals, the sutra states that merely reciting a single aspiration prayer for rebirth in Sukhavati will lead to rebirth there. The fourth is, in order to dispel pride, the sutra disparages generosity while praising moral discipline. In the Ornament of the Sutras, it says, "Equality and different meanings, as well as other times, and regarding the minds of beings, one should know there are four kinds of hidden intentions. Disparaging the Buddha's teachings, and being slightly lazy and self-satisfied, and arrogant, acting on desire, and regret and uncertain inversions, are obscurations of sentient beings; to counteract these, the supreme vehicle is taught." Thus it is. Secondly, there are four kinds of sutras with obscure intentions: those with introducing, characteristics, antidotes, and transforming obscure intentions. The first is, in order to guide the Shravakas to accept the view of the Mahayana, the sutra states that external sense bases such as form exist by their own nature. The second is, in order to guide the Mind-Only school to accept the view of the Madhyamaka, the sutra states the cutting off of lineage. The third is, like the four sutras mentioned above. The fourth is, the sutra states, "Knowing meaning in what is meaningless, dwelling well in what is inverted, being extremely afflicted by afflictions, one will attain supreme enlightenment." Thus, in the Ornament of the Sutras, it also says, "Introducing obscure intention, and characteristic obscure intention, and antidote obscure intention, and transforming obscure intention, Shravakas and self-nature, as well as subduing misdeeds, and the profound meaning of what is said, these four are obscure intentions." Thus it is. Thirdly, the sutras of definitive meaning that are primarily taught based on other meanings are the intentional sutras, and the sutras of definitive meaning that are primarily taught for certain special purposes are the sutras of adaptable intention. These two are not contradictory, because all four intentional sutras are included within the antidote obscure intention. Nor are all sutras included within these eight, because these are taught from the perspective of being limited to sutras of definitive meaning. The third is, guiding disciples through the four reliances.
