Thus. Thirdly, regarding the gotra, there are two views: those of Dignāga and Asaṅga. The first view is that the gotra is considered to be the roots of virtue gathered by the love and wisdom of the cause-time. The *Compendium of Meanings* states: "Thus, the nature of consciousness is the gotra, it is the essence of love and wisdom." The second view is that the gotra is considered to be the potential for the arising of uncontaminated wisdom on top of the ālaya-vijñāna. The *Sūtra* states: "The gotra of the bodhisattvas is the distinction of the six sense bases obtained by the nature of phenomena from beginningless time." From the perspective of nomenclature, it is explained as the distinction of the six sense bases, the uncontaminated seed, the ability to eliminate obscurations, and the imprints of hearing. It is also classified into two types: the naturally abiding gotra and the developing gotra. The second has three aspects: essence, classification, and characteristics. The first has three aspects: basis, definition, and etymology. The first is: the clear awareness of the mind's consciousness in the continuum of sentient beings. Its nature, the roots of virtue grasped by the thought of seeking enlightenment, etc., are the basis. The second is: the gotra of the Buddha, the stainless manifestation, ultimately becomes the dharmakāya for one's own benefit. The third is: from the word "गुणाधार(藏文:གུ་ཎ་ཏཱ་ར་,梵文天城体:गुणाधार,梵文罗马拟音:guṇadhāra,汉语字面意思:Holder of Qualities)", it is called gotra because of the meaning of saving qualities. The *Ornament of Realization* states: "Nature and growth, that is the support and the supported, existence and non-existence, and qualities, should be known as the meaning of salvation." Thus. Secondly, there are four types of classifications: from the perspective of basis, vehicle, and function, and a detailed explanation of the classification of the tathāgatagarbha. The first has two types: the naturally abiding gotra and the developing gotra. The first has three aspects: basis, definition, and classification. In the first, there are three ways of explaining the naturally abiding gotra: from the aspect of the object of knowledge's clear awareness, from the aspect of the emptiness of the nature of phenomena, and from the aspect of the union of the dharmadhātu. In the first way, the *Uttaratantra* states: "The contaminated consciousness that beings have is like the nectar of honey." Also, the *Collection of Praises* states: "Buddha arises in the mind of happiness, to that own mind I prostrate." Also, "Even in afflictions there is wisdom, likewise it abides without stain." Thus. In the second way, the *Ratnakūṭa Sūtra* states: "In what there is fabrication"

That which has nothing even slightly is the unconditioned. What is unconditioned? It is the lineage of the noble ones, because that lineage is the same as space and has no difference. So it is said. Regarding the third, in the Mahavaipulya Sutra, it says: 'Ah! Son of the Victorious One, the lineage of the Bodhisattva is to fully embrace the Dharmadhatu, as vast as space, and naturally luminous.' And so on. In the root text, it says: 'It is the basis of practice, it is the nature of the Dharmadhatu.' And so on. That also refers to the Dharmadhatu of the union of clarity and emptiness, the Tathagatagarbha, the Alaya consciousness, etc., which are different names. Those have three each: the ground time, the path time, and the result time. In the Ratnagotravibhāga, it says: 'The grounds are various Alayas, the Tathagatagarbha is also good, that Garbha is called Alaya, the Tathagata teaches. Showing the Garbha as Alaya, small-minded people do not understand. The nature of the mind is luminous, it is the good of the Tathagatagarbha.' So it is said. The second is, the Buddha lineage that has existed from beginningless time, which is newly established as the Dharmakaya for one's own benefit at the ultimate time of the manifestation of the stainless. The third has two divisions: from the perspective of the basis and the function. The first has two: the conditioned nature abiding lineage and the unconditioned nature abiding lineage. The definition of the first: What is the nature abiding lineage? At the ultimate time of the manifestation of the stainless, it is newly established as the realized wisdom Dharmakaya. Its nature: it is not included in the eight consciousnesses, because the similar lineage is cut off in the formless realms, etc. It is not included in the afflicted mind and the Alaya consciousness, because those must be abandoned in the way that the similar lineage is cut off at the time of attaining omniscience. Therefore, it is established only on the clarity and awareness of the consciousness with defilements, because the similar lineage pervades all sentient beings and can be the cause of ultimate omniscience. The definition of the second: What is that which is newly established as the Svabhavikakaya at the ultimate time of the manifestation of the stainless? Its nature: like the Dharmata of the consciousness with defilements, etc. Second, acting as a basis for practice and not acting.
