The Three Jewels and the three qualities of liberation. As it says in the Ratnagotravibhāga: "Within suchness and suchness, because of the purity of wisdom's vision, the assembly of the wise who do not turn back." This is the first point. Secondly, as it says in the Ratnagotravibhāga: "The teacher, the teaching, and the meaning of learning, the three vehicles and the three intentions, depending on the faith of all sentient beings, the three refuges are established distinctly." As it is said. Thirdly, the Dharma of the scriptures is not the ultimate refuge, because once it is attained, it should be abandoned like a raft. Both the learners and non-learners of the Lesser Vehicle, and the path truths learned by the Great Vehicle, are also not the ultimate refuge, because the qualities of abandonment and realization must be continuously increased, so they appear to be like deceptive phenomena. Their cessation truths are also not the ultimate refuge, because there is not even a little bit of what needs to be abandoned within oneself, it is only a thorough distinction. Those Sangha who possess the lineage are also not the ultimate refuge, because they possess the fear of the two obscurations in their respective ways. As it says in the Ratnagotravibhāga: "Because of abandonment, because of deceptive phenomena, because of non-existence, because of possessing fear, the two Dharmas and the noble assembly are not the supreme and constant refuge." As it says. Therefore, the ultimate refuge is definitely the Buddha Jewel. As it says in the Ratnagotravibhāga: "For those who seek the ultimate truth, the only refuge is the Buddha, because the Muni possesses the Dharmakāya, the Sangha is also the ultimate of that." As it says. Fourthly, as it says in the Ratnagotravibhāga: "Because it is difficult to find, because it is stainless, because it possesses power, and because it is the ornament of the world, and because it is the supreme nature, and because it is immutable, it is the Jewel itself." As it is said. Secondly, there are three: essence, division, and characteristics. First, according to the Vaibhāṣika, it is the verbal action of taking refuge in the Three Jewels, together with the motivation. According to the Mahāyāna view, it is the mind, together with its associated mental factors, that focuses on the Three Jewels, and through faith and trust, acknowledges them as the refuge that liberates from fear. Secondly, there are two divisions: from the perspective of result and from the perspective of object. First, there are two: higher rebirth and definite goodness. First, in order to accomplish only the perfections of saṃsāra. Secondly, to attain nirvāṇa, which is the abandonment of saṃsāra.

Furthermore, like taking refuge in the Three Jewels. Among them, there are two types of refuge: the Lesser Vehicle and the Greater Vehicle. The first is: for the sake of attaining Nirvana, which is the abandonment of Samsara for one's own benefit. The second is: like taking refuge with the intention of liberating all sentient beings from Samsara. The second is further divided into: the refuge of cause and the refuge of effect. The first is: focusing on the Three Jewels that have already been established in the continuum of others. The second is: like taking refuge by focusing on the Three Jewels that can arise in one's own continuum. The third is further divided into: object, cause, time, and the distinction of precepts, four in total. The first is: the object of refuge for those individuals who seek liberation is the Three Jewels, because it can temporarily protect from the fear of Samsara, and ultimately, it can establish one in definite goodness. The second is: faith with trust in the Three Jewels and fear of the suffering of Samsara are the general causes of taking refuge, and Mahayana practitioners, on top of that, rely on compassion that desires to free others from suffering to take refuge, as it is said in the Ornament [of the Mahayana Sutras]: "This is because one desires that very result, and this is acknowledged, and that also arises from loving-kindness." The third is: according to the Lesser Vehicle, it is until the end of one's life, and according to the Greater Vehicle, it is until one attains enlightenment. The fourth is further divided into: common and individual precepts, two in total. The first is: relying on noble individuals, listening to the noble Dharma, properly applying the mind, and practicing the Dharma in accordance with the Dharma. The second is further divided into: precepts of negation and affirmation, two in total. The first is: having taken refuge in the Buddha, one does not rely on external gods as ultimate protection; having taken refuge in the Dharma, one abandons harming sentient beings; having taken refuge in the Sangha, one learns not to rely on heretical companions, as it is said in the Great Nirvana Sutra: "Whoever goes for refuge to the Buddha is a truly virtuous layperson; at no time does one go for refuge to other gods. Having gone for refuge to the noble Dharma, one is separated from the mind of harming and injuring. Having gone for refuge to the Sangha, one does not associate with heretics." The second is: generating the perception of the actual Buddha even for a small piece of a tsa-tsa, and for even a single letter of a word,
