These are the two truths: the conventional truth and the ultimate truth. As stated in the Sutra of the Meeting of Father and Son: "The knower of the world, without listening to others, teaches through these two truths. Whatever is conventional is also ultimate; a third truth never exists." Also, as stated in the Root Wisdom: "The Buddhas teach the Dharma, relying truly on two truths: the conventional truth of the world and the truth of the ultimate meaning." Third, these two truths are of one essence but different aspects. Because if one analyzes with reason, one cannot find an ultimate truth that is different in essence from the conventional truth, and because there is no difference in the way they appear to the mind. As stated in the Commentary on the Bodhichitta: "Not different from the conventional, that itself is not an object. The conventional is said to be emptiness. Emptiness alone is conventional. Because without it, it cannot arise. Just like the made and the impermanent." In the face of those who contemplate the nature of reality, the two truths should not be analyzed as either one or different, because the Explanation of Intent states that there are four faults in each of these analyses. The four faults of the first analysis, as one, are: seeing the conventional truth will primarily lead to seeing the ultimate truth; just as attachment to the conventional increases afflictions, attachment to the ultimate will also increase them; it would be impossible to seek the ultimate truth separately from the conventional; and the ultimate would become like the conventional truth, with its various elaborations. The four faults of the analysis as different are: the ultimate would not be the nature of appearances; realizing the ultimate would not sever the imputation of true clinging to appearances; the suchness that cannot be found by reason in the conventional would not be the ultimate; and afflictions and purification would become one. Its meaning is: if the essence of the two truths is proven to be different when analyzed with reason, then even if one realizes the ultimate, one will not sever the imputation to the conventional, thus increasing afflictions, and increasing purification by focusing on the ultimate would occur simultaneously. As stated in the Explanation of Intent: "The aggregates, realms, and the nature of the ultimate, are of a nature free from one and different. Whoever thinks of one and different, those have entered into improper attention."

Classification. Definition. Etymology. Differentiation. There are four explanations of the valid means of ascertaining the two truths. The first is: the views of the Vaibhashika, Sautrantika, Chittamatra, and Madhyamaka schools. The first is: the dharma that abandons the mind of self-grasping when destroyed or broken, is the definition of conventional truth. For it, when destroyed, it abandons the mind of self-grasping; and when completely destroyed by the mind, it abandons the mind of self-grasping, there are two situations. The first, like a vase. The second, like the water inside the vase. That which does not abandon the mind of self-grasping when destroyed by the destroying mind is the definition of ultimate truth. The basis of the example is particles and consciousness. In the Treasury of Knowledge, it says: If something is destroyed or eliminated by another through the mind, if it is excluded, the mind will not adhere to it. Like a vase and water, it exists conventionally, while the existence of ultimate truth is different. The second is: the dharma that is fabricated by conceptual thought and cannot perform a function, and that which can perform a function established by its own definition, is considered a definition. General characteristics and conventional truth are the same meaning. Specific characteristics, ultimate truth, and entities are considered to be the same meaning. In the Commentary on Valid Cognition, it says: Whatever ultimate truth can perform a function, that here is ultimate existence. Others are conventional existence, these explain the definitions of self-characteristics and general characteristics. The third is: the dharma that is fabricated by conceptual thought, and that which is included by other-dependence, and the suchness that is established through reason that can withstand analysis, are successively the definitions. The imputed and other-dependence are the basis of the first example. The perfectly established is the basis of the second example. The fourth is: generally explaining, and briefly explaining the definitions, two types. The first is: Shantideva believes that the phenomena of mere appearance that become the object of worldly minds are conventional, and the suchness that transcends it is ultimate truth. In the Bodhisattvacharyavatara, it says: Conventional and are ultimate, these are considered the two truths. Ultimate truth is not the object of the mind, the mind is said to be conventional. Chandrakirti believes that the correct view, the object of the grasping mode of the samadhi wisdom of the noble ones, is ultimate truth, and the false view, the object of the grasping mode of worldly minds, is conventional truth. In the Introduction, it says: All things, through correct and false views, the two natures of things are grasped. The object of the correct view is suchness, view
