The four sequential practices of liberation. These are, respectively: formless meditation, love and generosity, doing for the sake (of Buddhahood), etc., as explained in the root text and commentary. These are the stages of explanation. A person whose potential has awakened in the Great Vehicle, having generated the mind of aspiring to supreme enlightenment, listens to the Great Vehicle's instructions from the Tathagata in terms of conduct, and generates the realization that accords with definite emergence in their own mindstream. Such a person, having generated it in this way, puts on the armor of intention, enters the path through action, accumulates a vast army of the two accumulations, and through the four practices of definitely emerging from samsara, cultivating by focusing on the eleven objects, ultimately manifests the three fruits of doing for the sake (of Buddhahood) in their own mindstream, which is the stage of practice. Secondly, there are two aspects: generating the mind of aspiration and how to engage in practice. The first is: generating the mind is for the sake of others. In the section on "generating the mind," there are two. First, the Great Vehicle's mind generation, which has three aspects: the physical basis, the mental basis, and the dependent mind generation. The first has two aspects: actual and dispelling doubts. The first is that all beings other than the unconscious ones and the beings of the formless realm are suitable as a basis for actually generating the Great Vehicle's mind of aspiration, through their own power or the power of others, as appropriate. That is, the first (unconscious ones) cannot actually arise, because the clear manifestation of the mind's consciousness is not continuous. The second (beings of the formless realm) cannot actually arise, because beings of the formless realm do not become objects of each other, and therefore the mind of wanting to be free from suffering, seeing others tormented by suffering, does not actually arise. The basis of the three lower realms can actually arise, because in the Sutra of Paying Debts, it is said that when the Teacher was born as a giant pulling a chariot in hell in the past, he generated compassion for his friend and generated the mind of enlightenment. In the Jewel Heap Sutra, it is said that the Noble Lord of the World placed many pretas in seeing the truth. In the Sutra Requested by the Dragon King Sagara, it is said that 21,000 dragons generated the supreme mind of enlightenment. Gods and humans

It is also suitable as the basis for the actual arising of Bodhicitta. The sutra says, "At that time, hundreds of thousands of gods and humans all generated the supreme Bodhicitta." Second, in the "Lamp for the Path," it says, "Those who possess the seven types of individual liberation vows, and who constantly possess other vows, are qualified for the Bodhisattva vows, otherwise not." Therefore, it is not appropriate for Bodhicitta of the Great Vehicle to actually arise in the continuum of beings in the lower realms, etc. If one thinks this way, there is no fault. This is because it refers only to the basis of the Bodhicitta vows of the vast conduct school, which is known as the Mind-Only school. Second, the condition is that the compassion that desires to eliminate the suffering of sentient beings by the power of awakening the lineage of the Great Vehicle, and the faith that focuses on the altruistic activities of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, are necessary as the basis of intention, because if one has these, the intention to attain perfect Bodhi for the sake of others will naturally arise. In the "Ratnagotravibhāga Sutra," it says, "If one has faith in the Buddha and the Dharma, and also has faith in the conduct of the Bodhisattvas, if one has faith in the unsurpassed Bodhi, then virtuous people will generate Bodhicitta." And in the "Ratnavali," it says, "Bodhicitta is its root, as stable as the king of mountains, and compassion that pervades everything, and wisdom that does not rely on the two." And in the "Great Commentary on the Eight Thousand Verses," it says, "For this, first, by the power of lineage, the seed of compassion is well awakened, and by the perfection of application and intention, Bodhicitta is completely grasped." Third, the nature of Bodhicitta, the trainings, the benefits, etc., are three aspects. The first aspect is divided into four aspects: entity, definition, classification, and demarcation. First, the brothers Asanga consider Bodhicitta to be a mental factor. In the "Bodhisattvabhumi," it says, "The supreme aspiration of the Bodhisattvas is the generation of Bodhicitta." And aspiration also refers to the intention that corresponds to the desire to pursue meaning. In the "Ornament for the Sutras," it says, "The aspiration of the stable ones is, the mind with intention, and with great joy and great effort, with great benefit and great source, is the mind of the Bodhisattva, is the mental factor with two meanings." In the explanation of this verse, Vasubandhu says, "The mind that corresponds to the three qualities and the two objects is called the generation of Bodhicitta."
