Jealousy arises from the cause of anger. This means that shamelessness, agitation, and stinginess have their causes, which are induced by desire. The cause of concealment is disputed; some say it arises from the cause of dispute, while others say it arises from the cause of ignorance. The causes of drowsiness, sleep, and impudence arise from ignorance. The cause of regret arises from doubt. Anger and jealousy arise from the cause of anger. Secondly, there are two divisions: the distinctions and from what causes they arise. The first is: Furthermore, there are six defilements of affliction: deceit, cunning, pride, as well as resentment, hatred, and malice. This means that there are also six defilements of affliction: deceit, cunning, pride, as well as resentment, hatred, and malice. The second is: Deceit and pride arise from desire; hatred and malice arise from anger. Resentment arises from holding views as supreme; cunning is induced by views. This means that the causes of deceit and pride arise from desire, the causes of hatred and malice arise from anger, the cause of resentment arises from holding views as supreme, and the cause of cunning arises from being induced by evil views. Thirdly, regarding characteristics, there are three distinctions: the distinction between what is abandoned by seeing and what is abandoned by meditation, the distinction between virtuous and unspecified, and the distinction between realms and grounds. The first is: Among these, shamelessness and impudence, drowsiness, sleep, and agitation are of two kinds. Others are to be abandoned by meditation; their nature is the same as defilements. This means that among the secondary afflictions, shamelessness and impudence, drowsiness, sleep, and agitation have two kinds: what corresponds to what is abandoned by seeing is abandoned by seeing, and what is different from this is to be abandoned by meditation. The others, jealousy, stinginess, anger, concealment, regret, etc., are all to be abandoned by meditation, because after seeing the truth, it is necessary to abandon them by meditation. This is the nature of affliction, because it corresponds only to ignorance. Similarly, the six defilements of affliction are also like this, and need to be abandoned as before. The second is: In the desire realm, there are three unwholesome things, and there are two kinds.

What is missing is unspecified. That is to say, the near afflictions are all unwholesome, because they are unwholesome in the desire realm. Dullness, excitement, and sleep each have two aspects, because there are both unwholesome and unspecified aspects. All afflictions above that realm are definitely only unspecified. The third is: In the desire realm and the first dhyana, there is deceit, because Brahma tempts. Dullness, excitement, and pride are all in the three realms. Of the sixteen near afflictions, the eleven other than the five just mentioned are not in the upper two realms, because they arise only from the desire realm. Third, incidentally explaining the correspondence, what corresponds to the main mind, and what corresponds to the feeling, there are two. The first is: What is to be abandoned by seeing and the accompanying pride are the aspects of the mind consciousness, because they arise only in the sphere of mind consciousness. Jealousy and other autonomous near afflictions are also consciousnesses that arise only in the sphere of mind consciousness. Attachment and anger and other root afflictions and other near afflictions are the support of the six consciousnesses, because they arise in the sphere of those consciousnesses. Second, what feeling corresponds to the root afflictions, and what feeling corresponds to the near afflictions, there are two. The first is: Attachment is associated with happiness and joy, while hatred is the opposite. Ignorance is associated with everything, and the view of self is associated with joy, suffering, and displeasure and doubt. Others are associated with joy and desire-born, equanimity and all the higher grounds, as their respective positions are.
