Abhidharma Commentary: A Precious Sheaf. I prostrate to all Buddhas and Bodhisattva heroes! For five hundred lifetimes, he was born as a Pandit, Possessing ninety-nine hundred thousand sections in his mind, He constantly recited the Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita, I prostrate to Vasubandhu, the second Buddha. Having opened a hundred doors of ripening empowerments, With the light of the sun and moon of the generation and completion stages of liberation, Dispelling the darkness of ignorance of the beings of the four continents, I bow to the vidyadhara lama, Changeless Vajra. From the mansion of the much-learned Lord of Seven Horses, Hundreds of rays of eloquent speech shine forth, Opening the lotus of beings' minds, I respectfully bow to the learned translator, Khenchen Chokyi Nyima. The seven Abhidharma treatises compiled by the seven Arhats, Elaborately explained in the Great Commentary (Vibhasha), The essence of the subject matter condensed into the root verses of the Treasury (Kosha), This commentary, the Precious Sheaf, is marvelous. Therefore, the Dharma to be explained here is the Abhidharma Pitaka, which mainly teaches the training in higher wisdom, from among the three precious Pitakas.

It is said that in Katyayana's treatises, the aggregate of realms was made by Gangpo, the aggregate of consciousness by Lhakyid, the entry into wisdom by Kata's son, the Abhidharma by Yixhi, and the categories of correct conduct by Süpo Che. To explain its meaning, five hundred Arhats gathered in the northern Vighnanagara monastery and composed a treatise called the "Great Treatise of Abhidharma," said to contain one hundred thousand shlokas. To interpret these, Master Vasubandhu composed this very "Abhidharmakosha" treatise. There are said to be five famous commentaries translated from India, including his own self-commentary in thirty fascicles, its commentary jointly written by the king's son and others, each in sixty-one fascicles, the commentary by Master Sangharakshita, which is in accordance with the Sutra Pitaka, in fifteen fascicles, and the commentary by Vasumitra, "Lamp of Essential Points." Tibetan commentaries are innumerable, among which the most excellent are the commentary "Clear Exposition of Words and Meanings" by Gewa Bum, who possessed the "Hundred Dharmas," and the "Chariot Leading to the Treasure of Abhidharma" by the Omniscient Fifth, two extraordinary commentaries. Thus, although there is nothing else to say beyond the previous commentaries, I will elaborate slightly with altruistic intention for the benefit of beings equal to myself. This includes the meaning of the name, the homage of the translation, and the meaning of the treatise, in three parts. The first part is that in the sacred land of India, among the four languages, Sanskrit is the language of the gods, and the name of this treatise is "Abhidharmakośakārikā." Translated into Tibetan, it is "Verse Summary of the Treasury of Abhidharma." Translated separately, "Abhi" means direct perception, "dharma" means dharma, "kosha" means treasury, and "karika" means verse. The second part is homage to Manjushri, which is easy to understand. The third part is the meaning of the treatise, including the preliminaries to engaging in composition, the meaning of the composed treatise, and the ultimate activity, in three parts. The first part includes homage, the vow, the meaning of the name, and the purpose, in four parts. First, homage to the one who completely destroys the darkness for all.
