Because there exists pride, such as the pride of thinking "I am equal," excessive pride, pride beyond pride, the pride of thinking "I am," manifest pride, slight pride, and perverse pride. Then, the scriptures say: "I am the most excellent, I am equal to others, I think I am slightly inferior," these three, and "There is one superior to me, there is one equal to me, there is one inferior to me," these three, and "There is no one superior to me, there is no one equal to me, there is no one inferior to me," these three, totaling nine. Does this not contradict? It does not contradict, because these nine are encompassed by the three: pride, excessive pride, and slight pride. Second, what is exhausted by the path of seeing and meditation, and what is to be abandoned by meditation, are all the entanglements from killing onwards to lying. Similarly, the craving for destruction and the craving for existence are to be abandoned by meditation, because the antidote, the path of meditation, can destroy them. Noble ones do not have forms of pride, such as the thought "I am," and craving for destruction, etc., because they do not have wrong views, etc. This is pervasive, because these grow from wrong views and the view of the aggregates of destruction. Noble ones do not have regret and non-virtue, because they do not have doubts and afflictions. Second, distinguishing from the perspective of forms, from the perspective of whether or not it is all-pervasive (co-emergent), from the perspective of whether or not it is focused on the uncontaminated, from the perspective of object and association, from the perspective of non-virtue and the unspecified, and from the perspective of the manner in which the three times possess subtle and coarse forms, there are five types. The first is that, among the Four Noble Truths of suffering, origin, cessation, and path, suffering and origin are to be abandoned by the path of seeing, view and doubt, and any ignorance that is not mixed with them is all-pervasive. Among these, nine are focused on higher, except for the two views. Anything that arises together with them is also all-pervasive, except for attainment. Cessation and path are to be abandoned by the path of seeing.

B. That is to say, there are eleven subtle pervasive afflictions: the views to be abandoned by seeing the truth of suffering and the truth of origin, as well as doubt, and the ignorance that is not mixed with these, because the shares are equal, so they pervade all realms. Of these eleven, nine are focused on the upper realms, except for the view of the perishable aggregate and the extreme view, which are focused on this realm. Whatever mind and mental factors arise together with these are also pervasive, because of the reason stated earlier. Attainment is not pervasive. The cessation to be abandoned by seeing and the path to be abandoned by seeing are not pervasive, because they are focused on the five types of objects to be abandoned. Secondly, there are two types: afflictions that focus on the uncontaminated and those that do not. The first is: Wrong view, doubt, and, associated with [cessation and path], as well as the unique ignorance, six are the objects of the uncontaminated. The cessation of one's own ground, and the path are mutual causes, so the path of the six grounds and the nine grounds is its, the path of the object. That is to say, the wrong view and doubt to be abandoned by seeing the cessation, and the ignorance associated with these, and the unique, that is, the unmixed ignorance, these six are the objects of the uncontaminated, because they are focused on the cessation and path of one's own ground. Thus focused, the six grounds of meditative absorption, the path of the nine grounds representing the first three of the formless realm are mutually equal, and are special causes of equal share. The second is: It is not desire, because it is to be abandoned. It is not hatred because it does not harm. It is not pride because of peace and purity and excellence, it is not holding views as supreme. That is to say, desire is not focused on the uncontaminated, because desire has been abandoned. Hatred is also not focused on the cessation and path, because it arises from harm, and the cessation and path do not harm. Pride is also not focused on the cessation and path, because it tends towards the aspect of non-peace, and the cessation and path are peaceful. Holding moral discipline and asceticism as supreme is also not focused on the uncontaminated, because the uncontaminated is pure for the sake of the true meaning. Holding views as supreme is also not focused on the uncontaminated, because it is seeing the inferior as supreme, and the uncontaminated is supreme.
