Nevertheless, it is only explained that there is a body of meditative absorption. What is that? It is not like some beings of the desire realm, having a body of coarse flesh and blood; nor is it like the form realm beings, having a body of light that appears. It is not like the pretas and intermediate state beings, relying on the thought that they exist in formless and signless dreams, nor is it a body through which mental imprints flow; it is not like hell, a body of experiencing suffering, but rather, because the movement of thoughts has ceased, it abides relying on the body of meditative absorption that is inwardly clear, lucid, and unwavering. To this, some people of little learning say: The formless gods should not rely on space, because the dharma that is relied upon is formless, and the distinction of space as a basis is unreasonable, because the formless has no place. As it is said, "The formless has no place." And, "Where do the formless die?" Therefore, wherever they die, that is the only place, they say, one cannot ascertain anything beyond form. To that, I reply as follows: Although it is said to rely on space, it is not admitting a place. Merely from the aspect of mind relying in the state of one-pointed meditative absorption, it is called a body that appears like emptiness, but it is not asserting that it exists like color and things, being an object of the five senses. The so-called place usually refers to external appearances such as mountains, plains, houses, etc., and houses used temporarily, etc., which function as dwellings. And form refers to the appearance of limbs and collections of parts of limbs, which is commonly accepted. Because these are not admitted here, it is not asserting that the formless gods, form, and place have inherent existence. If admitting that would be a fault, then it would be refuted by a valid, balanced reasoning. If that were the case, according to your system, you would also have to admit that there is form, because you assert that the continuum of mind relies on the aggregates of name and form. You would also admit that there is a place, because you assert that the formless gods exist in the place where they died. Therefore, the aspects of feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness all rely on the basis gathered in that meditative absorption, each relying on its own continuum of mind, and by the power of the meditative absorption progressing upward, naturally

They abide in joy, because they are above the three realms. The second is the Form Realm: The cause of being born there is the previous practice of the four concentrations, the six perfections, and the undiminished practice of the ten virtues. From these virtues, in whatever pure place, a body of light and a palace are formed together, hence it is called the Form Realm. That is, there is no hunger, thirst, heat, cold, disease, harm, old age, decay, and the suffering of not possessing power, but one spends time day and night without interruption in the joy of samadhi. Although there are various different distinctions in this, depending on the previous cause and the four states of the present abiding samadhi, it is divided into four grounds of the four concentrations. Although these four are of the same nature of samadhi, they are distinguished by the power of three habits, and thus are divided into three different places. Among them, the fourth concentration also has two other places for noble ones and ordinary beings. The first is: the summit of the five lineages, the Akanistha Heaven, twenty thousand yojanas measured downwards from the first formless realm, in the sky called "Adorned with Precious Jewels," from the infinite space, sentient beings fall and spread like drops of oil, appearing as bodies of light, transparent inside and out, walking with miraculous powers between each other and up and down. The abode of the noble ones, the abodes of those gods are: palaces of pure light nature appear like rainbows, this abode encompassed by form is the Akanistha Heaven, above it is the realm without form, hence it is called the Heaven of Neither Perception nor Non-Perception. The body size of those gods is sixty-six thousand yojanas, and their lifespan can also last sixty-six thousand intermediate kalpas. Below that, in the sky adorned with blue precious jewels, the gods born from Akanistha Heaven rely on what is called Very Visible. That is, because of seeing the pure view, it is called Very Visible. The body size is eight thousand yojanas, and the lifespan can last eight thousand intermediate kalpas. Below that, in the sky called Precious Wonderful Adornment, there are gods called Abundant Manifestation, because they have the abundant bliss of body and mind pacified, hence they are called Abundant Manifestation. The body size is four thousand yojanas, and the lifespan is also intermediate.
