The substance of production. Secondly, the substance that hinders the recovery of meditative absorption after having fallen from its actual practice. Generally speaking, what has not been attained also belongs to the conditioned phenomena within one's own continuum. Specifically, although not conditioned phenomena included within the continuum, there is attainment of the two cessations. Secondly, regarding characteristics, there are two characteristics: attained and unattained. The first has two aspects: general statement and specific statement. The first is: "Three aspects of the three times, virtue and so on of virtue and so on, self-realm of those belonging there, four aspects of those not belonging, three of learner and non-learner and neither, two aspects of non-abandonment are asserted." This means that attainable dharmas have all three times. For example, yesterday's meditative discipline, in relation to today's discipline, is past. That past dharma has attainment in all three times. Its defining characteristic is: in yesterday's time, the attainment of the substance that makes itself possess it is past. Yesterday's meditative discipline, in tomorrow's time, the attainment of the substance that makes itself possess it is future. In today's time, the attainment of the substance that makes itself possess it is established as present. It should be understood similarly for the present and future of attainable dharmas. The attainment of the three, virtue and so on, means virtue and so on in order. The attainment of those attainable dharmas that belong to the three realms belongs to their respective realms. For those attainable dharmas that do not belong to the realms, there are four possibilities: the attainable dharma does not belong to the three realms, but its attainment is included by them, there are three possibilities; the attainable dharma does not belong to any of the three realms, and its attainment is not included by any of the three, there is the fourth possibility. Their defining characteristics in order are: non-analytical cessation in the continuum of a sentient being who has a basis in the desire realm, non-analytical cessation that has a basis in the form and formless realms, cessation attained through the path of an ordinary being, and things like cessation truth and path truth. Differentiating from the perspective of learner and non-learner, the conditioned qualities of a learner, represented by a noble being, who has a basis in whatever he possesses, are established as dharmas of a learner. Representing a non-learner, the continuum of that

Non-learning paths are established as non-learning dharmas. To indicate that a compounded quality is neither a noble learner nor a non-learner, it is established as a dharma that is neither of the two. Although the cessation of truth of the noble learner and non-learner is not a dharma of the two, the attainment of the two is a dharma of the two. Selective cessation is established as a dharma that is neither the attainment of an ordinary being, nor the attainment of non-selective cessation, nor the attainment of contaminated things. For a dharma that should be attained but is not to be abandoned, its attainment is either to be abandoned or not to be abandoned, such as non-selective cessation and the individual selective cessation of the noble ones. Second, the special feature is: non-specified attainments are co-emergent. Except for clairvoyance and emanation, if the attainment of obscured form is also acknowledged, then form does not have prior arising. This means that the special feature of explaining "three times" is: the attainment of unobscured and unspecified is co-emergent, without prior or subsequent arising. Its special feature is: clairvoyance unspecified and emanation mind unspecified may have prior and subsequent arising. The attainment of obscured revealing form is only co-emergent, without prior or subsequent arising. If it is acknowledged, then the attainment of virtuous and non-virtuous forms used in practice does not have prior arising, but has subsequent and present arising. Second, regarding the characteristics of non-attainment, there are general explanations and methods of presentation. The first is: non-attainment is unobscured and unspecified. The past and future have these three. Belonging to desire and so on, and also to the stainless, the non-attainment of the path is acknowledged in the individual beings. This means the virtuous and so on of virtuous and so on. Explaining its opposite is: whatever dharma should be attained, whether virtuous, non-virtuous, or unspecified, its non-attainment is definitely unobscured and unspecified. The opposite of the three times is that the dharma to be attained has three times. For example, yesterday's monastic vows, in relation to today, are the past time of the dharma to be attained. For it, non-attainment has three times. From beginningless time, for a substance that obstructs having yesterday's vows, yesterday's non-attainment of vows is prior arising. For a substance that obstructs having vows from tomorrow onwards, its non-attainment is subsequent arising. Vows
