Obtaining a human body is very difficult. Obtaining a leisure and endowment is also very difficult. The appearance of a Buddha is also very difficult. And so on, it is extensively taught in the scriptures. It is also said in the 'Queen of Victory' (Śrīmālādevī Siṃhanāda Sūtra): 'Friends, obtaining leisure and endowment is rare! Being born as a human is rare!' To illustrate the difficulty of obtaining a human body with an example: As it is said in 'Bodhicaryāvatāra': 'Therefore, the Bhagavan said, like a blind turtle inserting its neck into a yoke hole floating in the vast ocean, obtaining a human body is extremely difficult.' As it is said in the scriptures, the yoke hole floating on the sea, moved by winds from the four directions, and the one-eyed sea turtle living in the water, surfacing once every hundred years, it is extremely difficult for its neck to fit into the hole. Using this analogy, it is explained that obtaining a human body is also similar. Third, such a rare human body has great significance, because relying on it, we can be liberated from the river of suffering. As it is said in 'Bodhicaryāvatāra': 'Relying on the boat of a human body, one crosses the great river of suffering. This boat is difficult to obtain again, so fools, do not sleep!' Especially for those who practice the Mahayana path, such a human body is highly praised. It is said in 'Letter to a Disciple': 'Becoming the basis for the Sugata's path, setting out to guide beings, the human body obtained by those with great mental strength, that path cannot be obtained by gods or nagas, nor by asuras, garudas, vidyadharas, humans or non-humans, or those who crawl on their bellies.' Fourth, relying on such a rare and meaningful body, one can achieve liberation and omniscience (Buddhahood). Therefore, we should recognize that it is more precious than a wish-fulfilling jewel and strive to extract its essence. It is said in 'Letter to a Disciple': 'Once obtained, it can exhaust the ocean of birth and plant the seeds of supreme enlightenment. The human body, which is more virtuous than a wish-fulfilling jewel, who would let it be fruitless?' Conversely, if one obtains a human body with leisure and endowment but engages in sinful actions, it is said to be even more foolish than a fool. It is said in 'Friendly Epistle': 'Using a golden vessel adorned with jewels to wipe away vomit, compared to that, being born as a human and committing sins, that person is even more foolish.' It is said in 'Bodhicaryāvatāra': 'Having obtained such leisure, if I do not cultivate virtue,' -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ན། ། 1-696

There is no greater deception than this, and no greater ignorance than this.' Even if you don't accomplish virtue in this life, don't think that it's okay to do it in future lives. As it says in 'Entering the Bodhisattva's Way': 'With such conduct of mine, I will not even obtain a human body. If I do not obtain a human body, sins will only increase, and there will be no virtue.' Therefore, those who do not practice virtue cannot even attain a good rebirth, let alone liberation. The basis of bad rebirths has no power to accomplish abundant virtue because it is oppressed by the burden of suffering and sin. As it also says in 'Entering the Bodhisattva's Way': 'Although I have the opportunity to practice virtue, I have not done so. When I am bewildered by all the sufferings of bad rebirths, what will I do then?' Therefore, repeatedly contemplate the reasons why it is difficult to obtain a leisure and opportunity body, why it is meaningful, and why it is appropriate to take its essence. Resolve to focus on Dharma as a means of taking its essence. And the best of all Dharmas is definitely the two aspects of Bodhicitta (enlightenment mind). Therefore, strive from the depths of your heart and cultivate mindfulness for the sake of generating, maintaining, and increasing this Bodhicitta. For this reason, this leisure and opportunity is very difficult to obtain. Having obtained a human body and accomplished great things, if you do not seek benefit in this life, how will you obtain it in the future?' As it says in 'Entering the Bodhisattva's Way', recite these words and contemplate their meaning in your mind. This leisure and opportunity body is very difficult to obtain, it is the basis of many qualities, it is the boat that saves beings from the great river of suffering, it is more precious than a wish-fulfilling jewel. Who with intelligence would not use this body to accomplish great benefit for themselves and others? A method to quickly encourage diligence: contemplate death and impermanence. Third, contemplating death and impermanence has three parts: contemplating that death is certain, contemplating that the time of death is uncertain, and contemplating that at the time of death, only Dharma can benefit you. The first also has three parts: there is no one born who does not die, life decreases daily and does not increase, and death cannot be averted by any means. The first, in general, all conditioned phenomena do not deviate from the four extremes, as the sutra says: 'The end of gathering is separation, the end of wealth is decline, the end of accumulation is exhaustion, and the end of life is death.' So why speak of the impermanence of the human body? The human body is extremely fragile and easily destroyed. As it says in 'Letter to a Friend': 'Earth, mountains, oceans, and suns, all these bodies will be burned by seven suns,' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
