'Not broken, not cracked, without defect, extremely hard, completely dense'—these four touch the sky and shake the earth, grinding grass, trees, tree sap, branches, leaves, and all sentient beings into powder. For these, it is not easy to escape by running quickly, resist with strength, or prevent with objects, mantras, and medicines. Great king, similarly, these four great fears will come, and it is not easy to escape by running quickly, resist with strength, or prevent with objects, mantras, and medicines. What are these four? Aging, sickness, death, and decay. Great king, aging destroys youth, sickness destroys health, decay destroys all perfections, and death destroys life. For these, it is not easy to escape by running quickly, resist with strength, or pacify with objects, mantras, and medicines.' Thus spoke the Buddha. Therefore, by contemplating the certainty of death through these three reasons, one should resolve to practice the Dharma. Second, contemplate the uncertainty of the time of death, which is divided into three points: the lifespan of beings in Jambudvipa (the world inhabited by humans) is uncertain; the conditions for death are numerous, while the conditions for survival are few; and the conditions for survival can also become conditions for death. The first point is that the lifespan of beings in Jambudvipa is extremely uncertain. The *Abhidharmakosha* says: 'Here, lifespan is uncertain, the shortest being ten years, and the longest being immeasurable.' Therefore, ultimately, lifespan can even be as short as ten years, while initially, lifespan can be so long that it cannot be measured with numbers. Especially now, even if people reach sixty years of age, they die without fulfilling their natural lifespan due to various adverse internal and external factors, which is clearly seen. The sutra says: 'Some are aging, some are young, some are in their prime, some are decrepit, and some even die in the womb.' The second point is that the *Ratnavali* says: 'The Lord of Death (Yamaraja, the Lord of Death) dwells in the mouth of the conditions for death, like a lamp in the wind.' Like a lamp in the wind, people die involuntarily due to the influence of various adverse factors. Therefore, one should not have any confidence in lifespan. For example, beings, human and non-human, from the outside, as well as the elements of earth, water, fire, and wind, and internal diseases such as wind, bile, and phlegm—these conditions that take life are endless. As it is said in the *Mahaparinirvana Sutra*: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is said in the *Bodhipathapradipa*: 'Life is always surrounded by many enemies, diminishing with each moment, and there is nothing that increases it.' Third, things temporarily considered as conditions for survival, such as food, clothing, shelter, relatives, and friends, are also clearly seen to become conditions for taking life. Some people, disturbed in mind by demons or sorrows, even end their own lives through the use of poisons and weapons. Therefore, most of the conditions for survival are also destined to become conditions for death, so the time of death is uncertain. As it is said in the *Ratnavali*: 'The conditions for death are many, but the conditions for life are few. These conditions can also become conditions for death, therefore, always accumulate Dharma.' Through these three reasons, contemplate the uncertainty of the time of death, and resolve to practice the Dharma now, without postponing it. Third, contemplate that at the time of death, nothing other than the Dharma will be of benefit, divided into three aspects: contemplating that enjoyment is of no benefit, relatives are of no benefit, and the body is of no benefit. First, the enjoyments that are acquired in this life through many efforts must be abandoned at the time of death, without even being able to look at them, let alone being of benefit. As it is said in the *Advice to the King Sutra*: 'King, just as a man or woman dreams while sleeping, seeing delightful gardens, mountains, forests, rivers, ponds, lands, and palaces, but sees nothing when they wake up. King, in the same way, whatever is the happiness of kingship, life, the happiness of kingship, the happiness of royal power, the happiness of desire, and the happiness of the enjoyment of desire, are all like dreams. King, just like elephants, horses, vehicles, armies, women, houses, virtuous wives, youths, ministers, accountants, ministers, gatekeepers, retinues, fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, wives, sons, daughters, servants, maids, workers, those who live by labor, friends, relatives, city dwellers, guests, gold, jewels, precious stones, pearls, lapis lazuli, conches, agates, corals, etc.,' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
