Now it is time to enter the stage of death. Alone, without companion, without friend. To abandon this world and go to the next. To lift the great corpse, to enter the great darkness, to fall into the great abyss, to enter the great cemetery, to go to the great solitude, to be carried away by the great ocean, to be driven by the wind of karma, to go to the direction where there is no foothold, to enter the great battlefield, to be seized by the great demon, to hang in the sky, to be surrounded by parents, brothers, sisters, sons and daughters. The breath ceases, and people say to divide the property, crying out: 'Alas, father! Alas, mother! Alas, child!' Tearing their hair. When generosity, asceticism, and Dharma become the only friends, there is no other refuge, no other protector, no other support than the Dharma. In the time of that great king, the Dharma was the island, the dwelling, the protector, and the reliance.' And so on, it is extensively taught in the scriptures. Therefore, by remembering death, we should understand that the happiness and suffering of this life are like lightning in the sky, or like the fleeting happiness and suffering in a dream. As it says in 'Entering the Bodhisattva's Way': 'Having enjoyed happiness for a hundred years in a dream, and another having enjoyed happiness for a moment, when they awaken, neither of them has that happiness returning. Long life and short life are the same at the time of death.' Therefore, one should turn one's mind away from seeking the happiness of this life, and keep the pursuit of happiness in future lives as the core goal, and understand that there is no method more supreme than the mind of enlightenment, and therefore, one should strive with all one's might to make the mind of enlightenment arise, increase, and develop. In order to keep the above-mentioned principles in mind, one should recite words such as 'Without illness, impermanence; youth does not last; wealth is not eternal; life is also impermanent. Since beings are inevitably subject to death, how can there be attachment to sensual pleasures?' from the Sutra of Impermanence, and contemplate their meaning. Alas! The terrible Yama (death lord) will mercilessly, lonely and miserably, quickly take you away, and at that time there is no refuge other than the Dharma, so, mindful ones, resolve to practice the Dharma! In order not to confuse what to adopt and what to abandon, the method to enter the right path is: Karma and its results. Fourth, cultivating the understanding of karma and its results: First, one must be certain of the above-mentioned principles, and then enter the practice of Dharma with the correct motivation. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Devotion to the Dharma depends on the arising of faith, and the arising of faith depends on contemplating karma and its effects. As it is said in 'Entering the Bodhisattva's Way of Life': 'The root of all virtues, the Sage has declared, is faith; and the root of that is constantly contemplating the ripening of karmic fruits.' Therefore, there are two aspects to this: contemplating karma and its effects in general, and contemplating them individually. The first aspect has two points: the certainty of karma, and the increase of its effects. First is the certainty of karma. As it is said in the Sutra: 'When death approaches and the king departs, wealth, friends, and relatives will not follow. Wherever that person goes, karma will follow like a shadow.' Therefore, when taking rebirth in another existence, one must necessarily associate only with white and black karma. Moreover, one must certainly experience the fruits of one's own accumulated karma; it will not ripen for another. As it is said in the Sutra: 'The karmas that one has done and accumulated will not ripen in the external earth element, water element, fire element, wind element, or space element, but will ripen and be experienced in this very aggregate that is possessed.' Also, in the 'Samadhiraja Sutra': 'Having done it, it will not fail to touch; what is done by others will not be felt.' Therefore, karma that has been done will not be wasted, and karma that has not been done will not be encountered. If one thinks that karma that has taken a very long time may not necessarily produce results, that is not correct. Karma that has not been destroyed by opposing forces will not be wasted simply because of the passage of time; when the conditions come together, it will certainly produce results. As it is said in the 'Karma Shataka': 'The karma of sentient beings, even after hundreds of eons, will not be wasted. When they gather and the time arrives, they will certainly ripen into fruit.' The order in which the fruits ripen is also described by the Elder Grahapati: 'Of the fruits of karma, whichever is heavier, whichever is closer, whichever is more habitual, and whichever was done earlier, from these, the fruit will ripen first.' The meaning of this is that the fruit of whichever karma is strongest will ripen first; if the strength is equal, then whichever karma is closest and clearest in the mind at the time of death; if that is also equal, then whichever karma is most habitual; and if that is also equal, then the fruit of whichever karma was done earlier will ripen first. If one thinks that the fruits of great black and white karmas are so certain, but very small karmas may not necessarily produce results, that is not correct, because the internal cause and effect increase. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
