Because it is very important. As it is said: In the 'Specifically Spoken Collection': 'Even doing small sins will lead to great fear and great destruction in the next life, like poison entering the body. Even doing small merits will lead to great happiness in the next life, and will also accomplish great deeds, like the abundant ripening of grains.' Therefore, remember the story of the dragon king Ela's leaf and the king Born on the Head, etc., the way great results arise from small causes, thereby gaining certainty. So, what is the difference between large and small? In the 'Friendly Epistle' it says: 'Constant and strong attachment, and without antidotes, actions arising from a basis with qualities, good and non-good, five are great. Therefore, strive to practice virtue.' Just as (the scripture) says, always, and strong attachment, and without antidotes of unfavorable factors such as regret, and arising from a basis with qualities such as the Three Jewels and the Lama, and actions arising from a beneficial basis such as parents are great, and the opposite of this is small. Moreover, one should specifically think that actions done with effort are called done and accumulated, and actions done without thinking are called done and not accumulated, etc. Similarly, in the 'Entering the Bodhisattva's Way of Life' it also says: 'Constantly aroused by strong attachment, or aroused by antidotes, from qualities and benefits, and from suffering, great virtue will arise.' And, in the 'Abhidharma-kosa' it says: 'The end and the field of merit and the basis, and the combination and the mind and the thought, from these small and large, actions are also small and large.' Just as (the scripture) says. Second, thinking separately is divided into two: thinking about the results of black karma, and thinking about the results of white karma. The first is divided into three: thinking about karma, thinking about results, and thinking about abandoning these. First, in general, the paths of good and non-good karma are inconceivable, but in short, in the 'Abhidharma-kosa' it says: 'From that, briefly summarized, good and non-good each, ten paths of action are taught.' Just as (the scripture) says, the main non-good paths of action are also ten, namely: in terms of body, killing, taking what is not given, and sexual misconduct are three; in terms of speech, lying, divisive speech, harsh speech, and idle chatter are four; in terms of mind, covetousness, malice, and wrong view are three. The nature of these is also, in the 'Abhidharma-kosa' it says: 'Killing is intentionally, without error.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Killing, taking what is not given, which is stealing the property of others, and taking possession of it through power or conspiracy. Not engaging in sexual misconduct, but being greedy for unchaste behavior, these are the four types of sexual misconduct. Lying, reversing right and wrong, causing others to misunderstand the meaning of words. And, gossiping to alienate others, words with a mind of affliction. Harsh words, which are unpleasant words, are all words of affliction. A greedy mind, which is improperly coveting the property of others. A harmful mind, which is hating sentient beings. The view that good and non-good are meaningless, this is a wrong view. These three (greed, hatred, and ignorance) and the previous seven (killing, stealing, adultery, lying, etc.) are all evil deeds. As it is said, one should understand (the ten non-virtuous deeds) from the four aspects of base, intention, action, and completion. In addition, the three poisons of affliction and the actions they cause are all called non-virtuous. As the 'Garland of Jewels' says: 'Greed, hatred, and ignorance, and the actions they produce, are all non-virtuous.' Secondly, each of these black paths of action has three kinds of results: the ripened result, the result similar to the cause, and the dominant result. The 'Abhidharmakosha' says: 'Everything can produce the ripened result, the result similar to the cause, and the dominant result.' First, the ripened result, according to the degree of magnitude and the difference in motivation, will lead to falling into the three evil realms such as hell. Even if one is born in the heavens, one will suffer physical and mental pain. The 'Garland of Jewels' says: 'Non-virtue produces all suffering, and also produces all evil realms.' It also says: 'Attachment leads to the realm of hungry ghosts, anger leads to hell, and ignorance mostly leads to animals.' The 'Bodhicharyavatara' says: 'Suffering and displeasure, all kinds of fears, separation from desires and cravings, all arise from the practice of sin.' It also says: 'Although sinners desire happiness, wherever they go, their sins will be completely destroyed, as if harmed by executioners.' Furthermore, the jailers peel off the skin of sinners, causing them extreme pain; molten copper melted by fierce fire is poured into their bodies; they are stabbed with burning swords and short spears, causing their bodies to shatter into hundreds of pieces; they fall on the burning iron ground, which is caused by many non-virtuous deeds.' If someone thinks that some evildoers seem to be happy, it is not so. Their happiness is also the result of past good deeds, and the ripened result of evil deeds will eventually mature. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
