One should practice through combination and continuous combination. As it is said in 'Entering the Bodhisattva's Way of Life': 'The wise, with faith, should always be diligent in all actions, not relying on anyone for any action.' Furthermore, one should understand the results of unspecified actions, the results of mixed black and white actions, and the distinctions between propelling actions and completing actions in separate black and white actions; the differences between actions that are experienced in this life, experienced after birth, experienced in another life, and those whose experience is uncertain. Then, one should strive to adopt and abandon, such as transforming unspecified actions into virtuous actions. In particular, for the causes of severing roots of virtue—wrong views, anger, and abandoning the Dharma—extremely heavy actions, one should purify them through confession and restraint, and strive to practice their powerful antidotes, which is the key instruction. In short, as it is said in 'The Three Vows': 'Virtuous conduct is excellent, producing the fruit of happiness; evil conduct is inferior, producing the fruit of suffering.' Therefore, one should always abide in the correct view of having certainty about the results of black and white actions, because with it, there is the lifeline to heaven and liberation, and without it, there is not. As it is said in 'Letter to a Friend': 'If you wish to realize heaven and liberation, then cultivate the habit of correct view. A person with wrong views, even if they practice well, all their results will be unpleasant.' Thus, after gaining certainty about the general and specific aspects of karma and its results, one will strive even for the extremely subtle adoption and abandonment of virtue and non-virtue. Most importantly, one should strive for the arising, abiding, and increasing of the precious Bodhicitta, and for the sake of generating mindfulness, as it is said in 'Moon Lamp Sutra': 'Actions done do not disappear, good and bad ripen their fruits accordingly. This gate of reasoning is very wonderful, subtle and difficult to see, the realm of the Victorious Ones.' One should recite these words and contemplate their meaning in mind. The way to ascertain the separate black and white karma and its results is like the fruits from the causes of medicine and poison. Having ascertained its infallibility through reasoning, striving for adoption and abandonment is the essence of Dharma. In order to generate a special mind of renunciation, one should contemplate the faults of samsara. Fifth, contemplating the faults of samsara is divided into two parts: contemplating the general faults of samsara and contemplating the individual faults of samsara. The first part is divided into three points: first --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Think about the three kinds of suffering: the suffering of suffering, the suffering of change, and the pervasive suffering of conditioning. Think about the six kinds of suffering. Think about the eight kinds of suffering. First, if one does not realize the general faults of samsara (cyclic existence), the mind that seeks liberation will not arise. As the *Four Hundred Verses* says: 'For whom there is no weariness here, how can there be respect for peace?' Therefore, in order to generate weariness towards all sources of suffering—all conditioned existence—it is appropriate to contemplate the faults of samsara. As the *Letter to a Friend* says: 'Those who desire certainty should be weary of samsara, the source of poverty, death, disease, old age, and many other sufferings, and listen to its faults.' The reasoning is as follows: If wise people carefully examine, they will find that all of samsara is nothing other than the nature of suffering. Some are the suffering of suffering, some are the suffering of change, and all are tormented by the pervasive suffering of conditioning. As the *Treasury of Knowledge* says: 'The three sufferings are suffering itself; all without exception is suffering.' Among them, most beings in the lower realms, such as hell beings, are tormented by the suffering of suffering, because later sufferings are added to earlier sufferings, causing both body and mind to be tormented. For example, adding smallpox to measles, or applying corrosive salt water to a wound. Most beings in the higher realms, such as gods and humans in the desire realm, are tormented by the suffering of change, because the decline of wealth, the separation of gatherings, and the exhaustion of accumulations cause what is considered happiness to become a cause of suffering. For example, overeating. All beings below the peak of existence are constantly tormented by the pervasive suffering of conditioning, because they cannot escape from defiled causes and results. For example, ingesting poison. Thus, those ignorant children who are ignorant of the true nature of reality cling to purity, happiness, permanence, self, etc., because they are disturbed by the power of perverse appearances that are the root of all confusion. For example, seeing hairs by someone with blurred vision. As the *Letter to a Friend* says: 'Those who do not maintain mindfulness have a confused view of the four perversions, which is a source of confusion.' In particular, with regard to the suffering of conditioning, the *Sutra* says: 'Children are like the palm of the hand, they do not perceive the subtle suffering of conditioning; noble ones are like the eye.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
