Therefore, when contemplating the suffering of cyclic existence as being like hairs, the wisdom of ordinary beings and noble ones is shown through the examples of the palm of the hand and the eye, respectively. Second, contemplating the six sufferings: First, the fault of uncertainty regarding enemies and friends: The beings of the three realms (Tibetan: སྲིད་པ་གསུམ་, referring to the desire realm, form realm, and formless realm) are not definitively enemies or friends in one lifetime, whether at the beginning or end, or in other lifetimes. Sometimes, a relative who was raised but disobedient becomes an enemy who kills or wants to kill you. As stated in the 'Letter to a Friend': 'A father becomes a son, a mother becomes a wife, those who were enemies become friends, and vice versa. Therefore, there is no certainty in cyclic existence.' Second, the fault of insatiable enjoyment: Beings with strong desires never find satisfaction in enjoying objects. Each sentient being, from beginningless time, has consumed more mother's milk than the four great oceans combined, yet they are still not satisfied. As stated in the 'Letter to a Friend': 'Each being has drunk more milk than the four oceans. Therefore, following their respective cycles of rebirth, the amount of milk drunk will be even greater.' Third, the fault of repeatedly abandoning the body: In cyclic existence, the fault of abandoning one body after another is countless. If the bones of the coarse bodies accumulated by each sentient being were piled up, they would exceed the height of Mount Meru. As stated in the 'Letter to a Friend': 'The heap of bones of each individual being has surpassed the height of Mount Meru.' Fourth, the fault of countless rebirths: The number of rebirths in other existences is endless. Because the number of mothers for each being cannot be estimated. As stated in the 'Letter to a Friend': 'Even if the first letter of each mother's name were written on a stick and used to count mountains, the earth would not be sufficient.' Fifth, the fault of changing into high and low states: Sometimes one experiences the happiness of higher realms, but this is unreliable. Even those who possess the perfect wealth of gods and humans will eventually experience many sufferings of the lower realms. As stated in the 'Letter to a Friend': 'Even Indra (Sanskrit: Śakra, the king of the desire realm's six desire heavens), who is worthy of worship by the world, falls back to earth due to karma. Even after becoming a universal monarch (Sanskrit: cakravartin, a king who possesses the wheel of power to rule the world), one becomes a servant again in cyclic existence.' and 'The pleasures of the heavenly realms are extremely great, and the pleasure of detachment of Brahma (Sanskrit: Brahmā, the lord of the form realm heavens)' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then, after obtaining (human form), becoming firewood for the fires of Avīci (Sanskrit: Avīci, literally: 'without waves') hell, may I avoid that unending suffering. Sixth, the fault of having no friends is: at the time of death and transmigration, having to go to another world without friends, having to abandon all places, bodies, enjoyments, and relatives, because one is driven alone by the red whirlwind of karma. As it says in the scriptures: 'Alone entering into the boundless darkness that the sun and moon do not illuminate.' The *Bodhicaryāvatāra* says: 'As it is in this life, similarly, having abandoned relatives and friends, one must go alone elsewhere, what use are friends and enemies alike?' Third, contemplating the eight sufferings: The sutra says: 'Alas! Birth is suffering, aging is suffering, sickness is suffering, death is suffering, encountering unpleasant things is suffering, separation from pleasant things is suffering, seeking what one desires and not finding it is also suffering. In short, the five aggregates of grasping (Sanskrit: pañca-upādāna-skandha, literally: 'five aggregates of clinging') are suffering.' As the scriptures say, among the eight sufferings, the first is the suffering of birth: most of the time, existing in places of birth such as the womb, and at the time of being born from there, due to the mother's food and actions, the body is as hot as if molten copper were poured into it, as cold as if covered by snow, as squeezed as if caught between rocks, as rough as if falling into a thorn bush, etc. If one clearly remembers it now, even just remembering it is unbearable, with various sufferings, and it also becomes the basis and support for future sufferings. The second is the suffering of aging: hair turning white like grass, the waist bending like a bow, skin wrinkling like dried tendons, etc., youth declining; being as heavy as carrying a sack of earth, bending like an old tree, needing support like a child, etc., strength declining; eyes not seeing mountains, ears not hearing the sound of conches, the mind not being able to determine day and night, etc., senses declining; furthermore, the body not being able to bear clothes, the stomach not being able to digest food, being despised by enemies and friends, the time of death approaching, etc. The third is the suffering of sickness: when the body is tormented by various hot and cold, wind, bile, phlegm, etc., most food and drink become the cause of disease, whatever actions one does become the root of suffering, one does not see pleasant things, and even if one sees them slightly, one cannot use them, leading to muscle atrophy, dry skin, constricted blood vessels, etc., and being afflicted by spirits and demons, etc. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
