Alas! Suffering torments like hell, poverty resembles the realm of Yama (Lord of Death). The suffering of animals here is such that the powerful, with their might, inflict all kinds of harm and cruelty upon the powerless, like a continuous river. As the 'Four Hundred Verses' states: 'For the noble, it is mental suffering; for the base, it is physical. These two sufferings destroy this world day and night.' Those who consider themselves to have a little happiness temporarily are merely accustomed to perceiving suffering as happiness. Because everything will eventually be destroyed and separated, unable to escape suffering. As the 'Letter to a Friend' states: 'Know that humans are truly not happy, impermanent, without self, and impure.' And: 'The body will eventually turn to ashes, ultimately dry and rot, ultimately impure and without essence, ultimately decompose and decay; know it as the nature of separation.' Fourth, the suffering of animals: those dwelling in the depths of the great ocean, or in the darkness between continents, etc., from birth they kill and devour each other, oppressed by the burden of suffering and sin, covered by the darkness of ignorance, without even the opportunity to hear the sound of the sacred Dharma, completely separated from peace and happiness, going from darkness to deeper darkness, etc., all these are terrifying. And those dismembered animals, for the sake of obtaining their meat, skin, horns, bones, wool, pearls, fat, and musk, etc., people use various methods such as traps, nets, ropes, snares, cages, etc., to slaughter them, bind them, beat them, employ them, drive them, they can never escape suffering and sin. As the 'Letter to a Friend' states: 'The birth of animals is also full of killing, binding, beating, and various sufferings, those who are far from peaceful and virtuous Dharma, devour each other, which is extremely terrifying, or for the sake of pearls, wool, bones, meat, and leather, they are killed, the powerless are driven by others with sticks, iron hooks, and stabbing.' The lifespan and body size of these beings are uncertain, the largest being the great whale-like Makara (sea monster), resembling a great mountain, devouring tens of thousands of lives at a time, yet never satisfied, these are extremely heavy burdens of suffering and sin. The longest-lived animals, as the 'Treasury of Knowledge' states: 'Among animals, the longest-lived...' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As it is said (referring to the previously quoted teachings). Fifth, the suffering of the preta realm is: those who dwell in the hidden places, according to the scriptures, five hundred yojanas (an ancient Indian unit of distance, approximately 7-9 miles) below Jambudvipa (the continent inhabited by humans), there are thirty-two kinds of pretas. Other scattered pretas are derived from these. In general, their suffering can be summarized into three types: Outer-obstructed pretas: tormented by hunger and thirst, wandering everywhere in search of food and drink. When they come to oceans, lakes, rivers, and wells, they are blocked and driven away by those wielding swords and spears. Even if they are not blocked, they only see pus and ashes, unable to enjoy anything. Inner-obstructed pretas: even if they find food and drink, their mouths are as small as the eye of a needle, unable to swallow; their throats are as thin as a lotus stem, difficult to pass through; their stomachs are as large as a mountain, never able to be filled; their legs are as thin as straw, unable to support their bodies. Obstruction of the food itself: even in good places, they cannot enjoy food, but can only eat impure and foul-smelling things like feces, urine, and snot. Some pretas even cut their own flesh to eat. When these foods enter their bellies, they turn into burning flames, burning and cutting their internal organs, causing them unbearable pain. In short, from birth, pretas are tormented by hunger and thirst, their skin and flesh are withered, their hair and nails are long, like burnt tree stumps. They lack pleasant enjoyment, are tormented by desire and greed, are separated from the Dharma, and constantly suffer from cold, heat, fatigue, fear, and so on. The 'Letter to a Friend' says: 'Pretas are born from poverty, their continuous suffering is unbearable, the suffering from hunger, thirst, cold, heat, fatigue, and fear is extremely unbearable. Some pretas have mouths as small as the eye of a needle, but stomachs as large as a mountain, tormented by hunger. They have no ability to find even a little bit of discarded impurity. Some pretas are skin and bones, naked, like dried palm trees. Some pretas have flames burning from their mouths, and can only eat burning ashes. Lower pretas cannot even find pus and feces, they beat each other, seeking pus from the sores that grow from their throats. In summer, pretas feel that the moon is also hot, and in winter they feel that the sun is also cold. Trees do not bear fruit, and they dry up rivers with just a glance.'
