Although the measure of body and life is uncertain, if we take the longest lifespan as an example, as it says in the scriptures: 'Continuously enduring suffering is due to the bonds of evil deeds. Some beings are bound by strong ropes, and will not die even after five thousand kotis of years.' Sixth, contemplating the suffering of hell: There are three types of hell: hot hells, cold hells, and neighboring hells. First, regarding the hot hells, the *Abhidharmakośa* says: 'Twenty thousand yojanas below this is the Avīci hell, and so it is. Above it are seven hells.' That is to say, below Jambudvīpa, there are eight hot hells, including Avīci, stacked one above the other. The first is the Sañjīva hell (等活地狱, Sañjīva, saṃjīva, Rebirth Hell), where beings born there, due to the power of anger, whatever they take in their hands becomes a weapon, and they strike each other fiercely, their flesh is destroyed and they fall to the ground. Then a voice comes from the sky: 'May you be reborn!' Then they rise and strike each other as before, experiencing unimaginable suffering. The second is the Kālasūtra hell (黑绳地狱, Kālasūtra, kālasūtra, Black Line Hell), where the hell guards draw eight or sixteen black lines on the bodies of the sinners, and then cut and chop them with burning saws and axes. The third is the Sanghāta hell (众合地狱, Sanghāta, saṃghāta, Crushing Hell), where the hell guards drive the sinners and repeatedly squeeze them between iron mountains and mountains shaped like sheep's heads, causing blood to flow like rivers. The fourth is the Raurava hell (号叫地狱, Raurava, raurava, Screaming Hell), where sinners, unable to bear the burning iron ground, search for a place to stay and protection, and see an iron house. When they enter it, everything inside and outside burns, and they cry out in agony. The fifth is the Mahāraurava hell (大号叫地狱, Mahāraurava, mahāraurava, Great Screaming Hell), which has two layers of iron houses, and the suffering is twice as great as before. The sixth is the Tapana hell (烧热地狱, Tapana, tapana, Burning Hell), where a burning iron skewer is inserted from the soles of the feet and comes out of the top of the head, and flames and smoke rise from all the pores and organs of the body. They are also boiled in a large iron pot with burning molten copper, or placed face up on the burning ground, and beaten with burning iron hammers, suffering the pain of hell. The seventh is the Pratāpana hell (极热地狱, Pratāpana, pratāpana, Extremely Hot Hell), where a three-pronged iron skewer is inserted from the soles of the feet and comes out of the shoulders and the top of the head. In addition, the body that experiences suffering, the cause of karma, and the nature of suffering are all more intense than before. The eighth is the Avīci hell (无间地狱, Avīci, avīci, Hell Without Interruption), where flames fueled by strong winds blowing from all four directions constantly burn the bodies of the hell beings, and they can only utter cries of agony, and their minds... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

are understood, the hell guards place sinners face up or face down in a burning fire, pull out and stretch their tongues with burning iron bars, plow their bodies like fields with burning iron plows, wrap them with burning copper plates after peeling off their skin, and beat and punish them with burning hammers, etc. In a very short time, they experience unimaginable suffering. These are described in detail in the 'Sutra on Mindfulness' (Dranpa Nyerzhag gi Do) and the 'Abhidharma' (Ngonpai Zhungluk). However, they are briefly mentioned in the 'Letter to a Friend' (Bheshei Spring Yig) because: 'Beings who commit evil deeds constantly suffer in hells such as पुनर्जन्म (Tibetan: ཡང་སོས་, Devanagari: पुनर्जन्म, Romanized Sanskrit: punarjanma, Literal meaning: Rebirth), ཐིག་ནག (Tibetan: ཐིག་ནག, Devanagari:, Romanized Sanskrit:, Literal meaning: Black Line), རབ་ཏུ་ཚ་བ (Tibetan: རབ་ཏུ་ཚ་བ, Devanagari:, Romanized Sanskrit:, Literal meaning: Very Hot) and བསྡུས་འཇོམས (Tibetan: བསྡུས་འཇོམས, Devanagari:, Romanized Sanskrit:, Literal meaning: Gathering Destruction), ངུ་འབོད (Tibetan: ངུ་འབོད, Devanagari:, Romanized Sanskrit:, Literal meaning: Crying), མནར་མེད (Tibetan: མནར་མེད, Devanagari:, Romanized Sanskrit:, Literal meaning: Uninterrupted).' 'Some are squeezed like sesame seeds, while others are ground into fine powder like flour. Some are sawn apart with saws, while others are split open by sharp and unbearable axes. Still others are forced to drink burning molten copper liquid.' 'Some are constantly burned in a collection of burning flames, and their mouths are also scorched. Some are placed in large iron pots and boiled like cooking rice.' 'Just as the bliss of Nirvana is the most supreme among all pleasures, the suffering of Avici Hell is the most unbearable among all sufferings.' The duration of their suffering is such that they cannot die or be reborn until their negative karma is exhausted. As the scripture says: 'Even if they experience extremely unbearable suffering for millions of years, they will not die until their negative karma is exhausted.' Regarding the lifespan of each hell, the 'Abhidharma-kosa' states: 'Fifty human years are one day and night for the lowest of the desire realm gods, and their lifespan is five hundred years. The lifespans of the two higher realms are twice that.' 'The lifespans of hells such as पुनर्जन्म (Tibetan: ཡང་སོས་, Devanagari: पुनर्जन्म, Romanized Sanskrit: punarjanma, Literal meaning: Rebirth) are successively the same as the lifespan and days and nights of the desire realm gods. Therefore, their lifespans are the same as the desire realm gods.' The second type is the cold hells. The 'Abhidharma-kosa' states: 'There are eight other cold hells, such as ཆུ་བུར་ཅན (Tibetan: ཆུ་བུར་ཅན, Devanagari:, Romanized Sanskrit:, Literal meaning: Blister Hell).' This indicates that to the north, directly opposite the eight hot hells, there are eight cold hells stacked upon each other. In the first hell, ཆུ་བུར་ཅན (Tibetan: ཆུ་བུར་ཅན, Devanagari:, Romanized Sanskrit:, Literal meaning: Blister Hell), beings are beaten by cold winds in the snow, their skin freezes and forms blisters. The second is ཆུ་བུར་རྡོལ་བ་ཅན (Tibetan: ཆུ་བུར་རྡོལ་བ་ཅན, Devanagari:, Romanized Sanskrit:, Literal meaning: Blister Bursting Hell) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
