The red wind is even stronger than before, causing blisters to burst and pus to flow. The third is 'Sotam Tamba' (Tibetan, teeth chattering): Due to extreme cold, the teeth clench and make a clicking sound. The fourth is 'Ji Hud' (Tibetan, wailing): Exhausted by suffering, a loud cry of 'Ji Hud' is emitted. The fifth is 'A Chu' (Tibetan, groaning): Tormented by intense suffering, only a faint groan of 'A Chu' can be uttered. The sixth is splitting like an উৎপལ་ utpala (Tibetan, Devanagari: उत्पल, Roman transliteration: utpala, meaning: blue lotus): Due to the attack of the red wind, the skin turns blue and splits into five or six cracks. The seventh is splitting like a पद्म padma (Tibetan, Devanagari: पद्म, Roman transliteration: padma, meaning: lotus): The skin color is deeper than before, turning red and splitting into about ten cracks. The eighth is splitting extensively like a पद्म padma (Tibetan, Devanagari: पद्म, Roman transliteration: padma, meaning: lotus): The skin becomes very red, splitting into a hundred or more cracks. Regarding the lifespan of these hells, the Abhidharmakośa states: 'One sesame seed taken every hundred years, the sesame seed is exhausted, the lifespan is over. The lifespan of the blister hell is like this, the remaining lifespans increase twentyfold.' This means that from a container filled with sesame seeds, one sesame seed is taken out every hundred years until it is exhausted, which is the lifespan of the blister hell. And the lifespans of the subsequent hells are shown to be twenty times that of the previous one. The third is the Peripheral Hells. The Peripheral Hells refer to the hells located near the great hot and cold hells, such as the seaside, as mentioned in the 'Sutra of Guarding the Sangha'. The Peripheral Hells. The Abhidharmakośa states: 'Outside the eight hot hells, there are sixteen more places, such as the pit of excrement and the river of fire, the river of corpses and the forest of swords.' This means that outside the hot hells, there are sixteen places. The first is the pit of excrement and fire, with flames about knee-deep. When the feet of those who dwell there fall into the pit, all the flesh burns, leaving only bones; when they lift their feet, new flesh grows. The second is the swamp of corpses and excrement. Outside the pit of excrement and fire, there is a swamp that smells like feces and is as hot as fire. When people fall into the swamp, insects called 'iron-mouthed worms' pierce them from the soles of their feet to the crown of their heads with their iron mouths. The third is the forest of swords, etc. Outside the swamp of corpses and excrement, there is a plain filled with swords. When people walk on it, their flesh grows and burns as they lift and place their feet. There is also the forest of sword leaves, where the leaves of the trees turn into burning swords, cutting off the limbs of the hell beings. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There, when they flee and fall, iron-beaked dogs devour them. Furthermore, there is a tree called Nashalmalī, Iron trees filled with sixteen-finger-long thorns. When those driven by karma try to climb up, the tips of the thorns point downwards; when they descend, the thorns point upwards. These thorns cut their flesh and skin. Iron-beaked crows land on their heads and shoulders, gouging out their eyes and tongues. These are similar to the harm caused by weapons, and are therefore counted as one category. The fourth is the river Rabme (Tibetan, rab med, Sanskrit: aprameya, English: immeasurable): they sink into boiling alkaline salt water, and when they float up, their flesh and skin are burned. When they flee to the shore, the messengers of Yama count their misdeeds and inflict various harms. These four situations recur in each of the eight hot hells, but through the division of the four directions, they are counted as sixteen each. These situations are also as stated in the *Letter to a Friend*: ‘May I not again suffer the unbearable pain of being burned and decaying.’ ‘May I not endure in hell the unbearable touch of being ground, cut, and blown by machines.’ ‘May my hands, feet, ears, and nose be cut off by forests of sword-like leaves.’ ‘Some are made to pass through a blazing iron forest filled with thorns.’ ‘Some are devoured by fierce iron-beaked dogs, their hands raised to the sky.’ ‘Others are pecked at by crows with iron beaks and unbearable claws, unable to do anything.’ And so forth. ‘May I not again enter the immeasurable river of hell, filled with unbearable boiling alkaline water.’ One should understand the meaning of these words. Whichever of the aforementioned hells they are born into, they will experience immeasurable suffering. As it says in the same text: ‘The suffering of being fiercely stabbed by three hundred short spears in a single day in this world is not even a small fraction of the suffering in hell.’ ‘Even seeing, hearing, remembering, reading, or depicting hell generates fear, what need is there to mention experiencing its terrible karmic consequences?’ Therefore, merely hearing the names of these hells generates great fear, and those who are separated from these hells by only a breath… --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
