Therefore, to dwell without vigilance is to exhaust oneself in meaningless conduct. As it says in the text: 'The interval of a single breath of a sinful being is filled with immeasurable suffering of hell. Hearing this, what is fearless is the nature of a vajra!' In short, all three realms of existence (desire realm, form realm, and formless realm) are like a pit of fire, for they are constantly tormented by various unbearable sufferings. They are like a plain of razors, for the body and mind are pierced by numerous thorns. They are like a pit of impurity, for they are always defiled by various faults of karma and afflictions. They are like a house of flesh prisons, for they are fearful places from which it is difficult to escape. As it is also said: 'Such is samsara, so there are no good births among gods, humans, hell beings, animals, and hungry ghosts. Know that birth is a vessel of many harms.' Therefore, those who possess the wisdom to distinguish between good and bad should abandon meaningless activities and strive in every way to liberate themselves and others from this great ocean of endless suffering, for there is no more important task than this. Considering this important point, the glorious Nāgārjuna advised: 'If a fire suddenly breaks out on your head or clothes, even abandoning the effort to extinguish it, strive to prevent rebirth. There is nothing more supremely important than that.' If one does not carefully contemplate the faults of samsara, there is no opportunity to generate the mind of seeking liberation and great compassion. Therefore, repeatedly contemplate them, and when you have resolved to pursue the path of liberation, know that the most important thing is the precious mind of bodhicitta. For the sake of generating, maintaining, and increasing this alone, put on great armor and cultivate mindfulness and awareness. As it says in the Mindfulness Sutra: 'Sentient beings in hell are tormented by hellfire, hungry ghosts are tormented by hunger and thirst, animals devour each other, gods fall due to heedlessness, and humans suffer from short lives. Even in a samsara the size of the tip of a needle, there is never happiness.' Furthermore, the Uttaratantra states: 'The cycle of birth and death in samsara is without beginning, and the path to it is fivefold. Just as there is no fragrance in impurity, there is no happiness in the five paths.' Utter these words and contemplate their meaning in your mind. Unbearable suffering blazes like fire --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i'obs. An impure pit defiled by various faults, The ocean of existence, difficult to cross and without end. Those who desire liberation, generate renunciation from this! 1-747 Thus, if one diligently trains in these preliminary practices and strives to adopt what is beneficial and abandon what is harmful, then all the necessary practices for individuals of small and middling capacity, as explained in texts like the 'Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment,' are included within this. Because fearing the suffering of the lower realms and engaging in adopting and abandoning solely for the sake of higher rebirth is the path of the individual of small capacity; seeing all of samsara as like flames and striving for liberation from it for one's own sake is the path of the individual of middling capacity. As it is said in the 'Lamp for the Path': 'Whoever, by whatever means, seeks only the happiness of samsara, and works for his own sake, know him to be the lowest of persons. Turning his back on the happiness of existence and abstaining from sinful deeds, whoever seeks only his own peace is called a person of middling capacity.' Thereafter, if one thinks about the suffering of samsara mentioned above as also existing on oneself and finds it unbearable, then by analogy, one desires the cessation of suffering for limitless sentient beings, and for that purpose, cultivates the two aspects of Bodhicitta, which is the path of the individual of great capacity. For in that very text, it is well said: 'Whoever, through understanding the suffering of his own continuum, wishes to completely eliminate all the suffering of others, that person is supreme.' 1-748 If understood in this way, then within this instruction, all the necessities for the stages of the path of the three types of individuals—small, middling, and great—are included without omission. Therefore, the key point that the venerable Atiśa Dīpaṃkara Shrijnana guides most trainees through the stages of the path of the three types of individuals, and guides a few with supreme intelligence through the instructions on mind training, will be ascertained without any inversion. Second, the main practice: cultivating the two aspects of Bodhicitta. Therefore, the second general topic, the main practice of cultivating the two aspects of Bodhicitta, is divided into two parts: cultivating relative Bodhicitta and cultivating ultimate Bodhicitta. The first part is: From the meaning of the root verse 'Having become stable, reveal the secret,' it means that after stabilizing relative Bodhicitta, one reveals the secret of ultimate Bodhicitta to those who are suitable vessels. This shows the order of the two. Therefore, this verse does not appear in some texts, and some earlier lamas also practiced ultimate Bodhicitta first. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
