They have also given birth to me. Not only in this life, but from beginningless time, they have repeatedly become my mothers, nurturing me with kindness. The sutra says, 'There is no sentient being who has not been a mother, who has not drunk milk. Even the amount of water in the four great oceans cannot compare to it.' Therefore, one should remember their kindness. Then, contemplate how that kind mother lacks happiness and the cause of happiness—virtue. For example, 'Although I have now obtained a human body with leisure and endowments, I do not have the ability to extract its essence; I lack the wisdom to distinguish between good and evil; my intention and actions for performing virtuous deeds are weak; I naturally tend towards non-virtuous actions. Therefore, even the happiness of higher realms is difficult to achieve, let alone the happiness of liberation and omniscience!' Having generated such certainty, contemplate, 'May this mother be endowed with happiness and the cause of happiness—perfect virtue!' In order to achieve this, one must be free from obstacles. Therefore, may all the suffering and sins in her continuum ripen on me!' Pray from the depths of your heart and also recite it with your mouth. At this time, visualize all of the mother's sins and sufferings in the form of black light, gathering like dark clouds into your heart, and generate great joy at this. When you have become somewhat familiar with this, Focus on relatives such as fathers, friends, and so on, and contemplate their kindness in this life and previous lives, as before. Then, focus on those who are neutral between enemies and friends, and then on beings and non-humans who are considered enemies, and contemplate, 'All these beings, from beginningless time, have repeatedly been my fathers and mothers, and at that time they nurtured me with kindness just like my current parents. Because of the cycle of birth and death, we do not recognize each other, so we develop attachment to some and hatred to others, which is entirely due to the influence of delusion.' Therefore, contemplate, 'How wonderful it would be if all these beings, who are equal in kindness, could have happiness!' etc., and practice as before. Then, expand the object of focus, and practice focusing on the beings of one continent, four continents, the three thousand great thousand worlds, and finally all beings in the boundless expanse of space. These methods are also as stated in the *Middle Stages of Meditation*: 'All sentient beings desire happiness and do not desire suffering. In beginningless samsara, there is no sentient being who has not been my relative hundreds of times.' Thinking in this way, 'What is the difference?' Attachment arises towards some beings, and attachment arises towards others. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Will become angry.’ The practice of loving-kindness is, first of all, directed towards friends, with the aim of wishing them happiness. Gradually, it should also be practiced towards ordinary people and enemies.’ This is very well said. The benefits of practicing loving-kindness in this way are, as stated in the 'King of Samādhis Sutra': 'Even if one were to offer countless various offerings to the noble ones every day for billions of kalpas, it would not equal the number of thoughts of loving-kindness.’ The 'Garland of Jewels' states: 'Even if one were to give food to three thousand Brahmins three times a day, it would not equal the merit of a moment of loving-kindness.’ Gods and humans will become friendly, and they will be protected, feel happiness and peace of mind, be unharmed by poison and weapons, achieve their goals without effort, and be reborn in the Brahma world. Even if one does not attain liberation, one will obtain the eight qualities of loving-kindness.’ Like that. Furthermore, the previous lamas said: 'The story of Azawo's daughter, etc., is the beginning of this instruction.’ Therefore, one should also remember the story of Azawo's daughter. The nectar that washes away the stains of various sins, is the method to extinguish the flames of intense anger, is the cause for the growth of the wondrous tree of compassion. May the mind of loving-kindness moisten my being. Second, cultivating taking based on compassion: On the basis of having loving-kindness as mentioned above, compassion arises easily. Therefore, one should then cultivate compassion. In the 'Middle Stages of Meditation' it says: 'Moisten the mind with the water of loving-kindness, make it like fertile ground, and if you plant the seed of compassion, it will easily and completely grow.’ Therefore, one should cultivate compassion after nourishing the mind with loving-kindness. The nature of compassion is: focusing on sentient beings who possess suffering and the causes of suffering, wishing that they be free from suffering and the causes of suffering. As it says in the 'Middle Stages of Meditation': 'Compassion is the state of wishing that those who suffer be free from it.’ This is the root of the Mahāyāna path, the main cause for attaining omniscience, and is important in the beginning, middle, and end. In the 'Sutra of the Collection of True Dharma' it says: 'Bhagavan, Bodhisattvas do not need to study many dharmas. Bhagavan, if a Bodhisattva grasps and contemplates one dharma, he will obtain all the dharmas of the Buddha.’ So, what is this one dharma? It is great compassion.’ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
