How pitiful are these mothers who are afflicted by hunger and thirst, shrouded in ignorance and darkness, tormented by the weapons of strife, wearied by endless seeking, seized by the omens of death, led by the messengers of Yama (the lord of death), traversing the perilous paths of the bardo (intermediate state), running alone in fear, deceived by sinful companions, bound by the noose of demons, deprived of protectors and allies, and wandering in the endless cycle of samsara! If one can be sincere and genuine, without hypocrisy or pretense, penetrating to the bone, and cultivating unwavering faith, willingly taking upon oneself the suffering of others in order to relieve them, then one should practice the exchange of self and others as before. The stages of cultivating great compassion are also explained more clearly in the *Madhyama-vyavasthāpana-krama* (Middle Stages of Meditation). It says: 'Therefore, one should regard all beings as being immersed in a blazing fire of suffering. Just as I do not wish to suffer, so do all others.' Thinking in this way, and contemplating: 'Alas! How pitiful are these beings who are connected to me and are suffering. I must liberate them from suffering!' Like oneself experiencing suffering, one should generate compassion that desires them to be free from it. Whether in meditative absorption or in all activities, one should cultivate compassion for all beings at all times. Initially, one should contemplate the various sufferings mentioned above by seeing them experienced by those who are close friends. Then, seeing that all beings are equal and without distinction, and contemplating that all beings have been one's relatives, one should cultivate compassion for those who are of middling relation. When that compassion equally pervades those who are close friends, one should cultivate it for all beings in the ten directions. Just as a mother, seeing her beloved child suffering, naturally desires to relieve their suffering, when that compassion that desires to relieve the suffering of all beings arises naturally and is equal for all beings, it is called complete, and one also obtains the name of great compassion. Similarly, the method of cultivating compassion by contemplating the cessation of suffering of the objects of focus is also explained very clearly in the sutras. In the *Dhāraṇīśvararājaparipṛcchā* (The Questions of Dhāraṇīśvararāja) it says: 'How pitiful are these beings, who are slaves of existence, defiled by attachment to wives, sons, and daughters, without freedom, and do not believe in themselves.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Belonging', in order to have autonomy, to be used by me, and to make me happy, I should teach them the Dharma.' When a Bodhisattva generates great compassion for sentient beings, they will think similarly: 'Alas, these sentient beings are discordant with each other, full of anger, hatred, and harmful intentions.' 'Alas, these sentient beings are controlled by evil friends, separated from virtuous spiritual friends, and engage in evil deeds.' 'Alas, these sentient beings are parched, oppressed by attachment, do not know contentment, and are separated from the abode of noble wisdom.' 'Alas, these sentient beings are blinded by ignorance and delusion, clinging to self, sentient beings, life, nourishment, the born, and the Pudgala (Sanskrit: Pudgala, meaning individual, person).' 'Alas, these sentient beings are bound by the noose of Mara, dwelling in deceit and arrogance.' 'Alas, these sentient beings have closed the door to Nirvana and opened the door to the lower realms.' And so on, elaborating on how Bodhisattvas generate compassion. Therefore, do not follow those who desire results without planting causes, but strive to sow the seed of the Dharma heart—compassion. Because this is the root of refuge and Bodhicitta in the Mahayana, and the source of all worldly and transworldly virtues. The Ratnavali says: 'Those who desire that result should know that it arises from compassion.' It also says: 'Compassion is its root.' And: 'Great compassion is the source of virtues, who would not have compassion for all sentient beings?' Therefore, in order to build the magnificent mansion of liberation, to enjoy the grand feast of accomplishing the two benefits, virtuous ones, please cultivate the root of Bodhicitta—compassion—with many efforts! Third, cultivating acceptance (of suffering) based on Bodhicitta: Thus, for those who have loving-kindness that desires happiness and compassion that desires freedom from suffering, generating the Bodhicitta that desires to accomplish the benefit of others, therefore, one should cultivate the Bodhicitta as the main path. Because this is the seed of perfect enlightenment, the gateway to the Mahayana, and the source of all happiness. As it is said, in the Arya Gandavyuha Sutra: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
