Although there isn't a major contradiction, some aspects are not entirely reasonable. This is because these very words appear in some pure scriptures, and from the general framework of the path, conventional and ultimate truth, means and wisdom, merit and wisdom are taught in sequence. Furthermore, it contradicts the sequence of the three trainings, the six perfections, and so on. Therefore, first, cultivating the conventional Bodhicitta (enlightenment mind) is divided into two: the practice of meditative equipoise and the practice of post-meditation. The first is: 'Practice exchanging giving and taking; subdue these two with the wind.' This is taught, although it is also cultivated in the general Mahayana (Great Vehicle) teachings through the seven causes and effects and so on. Here, however, like straightening a crooked tree, from the very beginning, one cultivates the Bodhicitta of exchanging self and others. This is not suitable for those with weak mental capacity. It is a great mind training, a wonderfully quick path of the Mahayana, because the 'Bodhisattvacharyavatara' (A Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life) states: 'Whoever wishes to quickly protect themselves and others should practice the secret, supreme method of exchanging self and others.' Similarly, the 'Trisamvaraprakarana' (Differentiation of the Three Vows) also states: 'Exchanging self and others is the essence of the Buddha's teachings.' And so on, concluding with: 'Therefore, understand exchanging self and others; that is the quick way to attain perfect enlightenment. In the meantime, worldly perfections will arise.' This is explained in detail. Without relying on this method, the temporary and ultimate fruits of happiness cannot be achieved, because the 'Bodhisattvacharyavatara' states: 'If one does not exchange one's own happiness for the suffering of others, one will not attain Buddhahood and will not have happiness even in samsara.' The 'Trisamvaraprakarana' states: 'If the key point of Bodhicitta is missed, other dharmas will not fulfill.' Therefore, there are three aspects to this: cultivating taking, cultivating giving, and cultivating exchanging. The first is divided into two parts: the necessity of cultivation and the order of the method of cultivation. The first is: the root of all the faults of samsara is this enemy of cherishing the self, and it should be destroyed with a powerful antidote, as the 'Jataka' (Birth Stories) states: 'Alas, this love for oneself is utterly inappropriate and unbearable.' And 'Who is increasing this enemy of loving oneself?' If it is not like this, then through attachment to oneself and hatred of others, one will not be freed from the burden of suffering and sin, as the 'Mahayanasutralamkara' (The Ornament of the Sutras) states: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ignorant beings strive only for their own happiness, but they never attain it and instead suffer. As stated in the *Pramanavarttika* (Commentary on Valid Cognition): 'If there is a 'self,' then there is the understanding of 'other.' 'From the distinction of self and other, attachment and hatred arise. All faults are closely connected with these.' As stated in the *Bodhicharyavatara* (A Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life): 'Whatever harm there is in the world, whatever fear and suffering, arises from clinging to the 'self.' So what need have I for this great demon?' As stated in the *Bodhicharyavatara*: 'This 'self' has harmed me in hundreds of lifetimes. The above are the relevant discussions. Next, the second part is divided into three aspects: cultivating based on loving-kindness, cultivating based on compassion, and cultivating based on bodhicitta. First is the first point: Generally, in the *Mahayanasutralamkara* (The Ornament of the Great Vehicle Sutras), it says: 'The steadfast Brahma abandons disharmony,' 'possesses non-conceptual wisdom, enters the three objects of focus, and fully matures sentient beings.' Here, it is said that each of the four immeasurables, such as loving-kindness, possesses four characteristics: the characteristic of abandonment is abandoning their respective disharmonious aspects; the characteristic of companionship is possessing non-conceptual wisdom; the characteristic of the object of focus is entering the three realms of sentient beings, dharma, and non-object of focus; the characteristic of action is fully maturing sentient beings. Here, relevant to the current situation is loving-kindness focused on sentient beings. Its essence is: focusing on the object of focus, sentient beings, with the form of wishing them to attain happiness and the cause of happiness—virtuous dharma. As stated in the *Madhyamakavatara* (Entering the Middle Way): 'Diligently working for the benefit of beings,' 'is called great loving-kindness.' Like this, first cultivating by focusing on one's own mother makes it easier to generate loving-kindness. Visualize your own mother appearing in front of you, and then contemplate the kindness she has given: from the beginning in the womb, to the later days, she did everything she could, using all possible means to help me and eliminate all harm. She worried that I would get sick and feared that I would die, so she tirelessly sought medicine and care for me. She watched me with loving eyes and embraced me with a loving heart, fed me food, wiped away dirt, warmed me with her body temperature, and called me by various affectionate names. She gave me all the food she couldn't bear to eat herself, the clothes she couldn't bear to wear herself, and the wealth she couldn't bear to enjoy herself. She taught me worldly etiquette, speech, behavior, and farming. In short, she bore the burden of all kinds of sins and sufferings for my sake. Carefully contemplate these things, generate a feeling of closeness and love, and strengthen this conviction. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
