Houses and lands, gold and silver, lapis lazuli and coral, and pearls and shells; and servants and livestock, and fields and lands; and money, clothes, ornaments, wealth, grain, and storehouses; all of these must be abandoned and left behind. All of these are impermanent, unstable, unreliable, of a changing nature, short-lived, not lasting, moving, shaking, decaying, momentary, ultimately sinful, the gate of exhaustion and decay, ultimately of a destructive nature, ultimately of separation, fearful, harmful, full of sorrow and conflict, decaying, breaking, dissolving, destructive. Great king, therefore, one should view them as impermanent, view them as the gate of exhaustion and decay, and be fearful and afraid of death. Great king, you should rule the kingdom only with Dharma, and should not be in accordance with what is not Dharma. You should be in accordance with Dharma, and should not be in accordance with what is not Dharma,' as it is extensively spoken in the scriptures. Secondly, when tormented by the feeling of being cut off, even if surrounded by thousands of brave and steadfast relatives and friends, there is no ability to alleviate the pain of death, or to delay the time of death, or to provide any help. One must experience the feeling of suffering alone. As it is said in the *Bodhicharyavatara*: 'While I lie in bed, even surrounded by all my relatives and friends, the feeling of death, I alone will experience. When seized by the messengers of Yama (Lord of Death), what help are relatives? What help are friends? At that time, the only refuge is merit, but I have not cultivated it.' Thirdly, when the time comes to go to another world, this body of this life cannot provide any help. Even when the consciousness in the bardo (intermediate state) exists without support, it cannot be a place or support for even a single day. As it is said in the same text: 'Even this single body, the flesh and bones born together, will break down and separate, what need is there to mention other friendships?' In short, having known that death is inevitable and uncertain when it will come, it is appropriate to reduce attention to the affairs and preparations of this life. As it is said in the same text: 'Death is unreliable, it does not stop whether you are prepared or not. Whether you are sick or not, everyone cannot be certain of their lifespan.' Furthermore, it is said in the same text: 'Have you not seen your own ranks gradually being killed? Yet, you rely on sleep, like a butcher and a buffalo.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Similarly, dwelling in unrestrained sleep and laziness will only lead to inferior actions. Regardless of whether things are completed or not, when the Lord of Death suddenly arrives, the mind will be filled with regret. As it is said in the scriptures: 'Things not done are started, and things done continue to be done, but when the Lord of Death suddenly arrives, one will think: Alas, I am destroyed!' Therefore, if at that critical moment, one still thinks of striving to practice the Dharma, it is impossible, because various sufferings will disturb your mind, and the urgency of time will leave you with no recourse. As it is said in the scriptures: 'The power of sorrow makes the eyes swollen and red, and tears drip from the face. Relatives and friends feel despair, and gaze upon the face of the messengers of Yama. Remembering one's own sins and suffering, and hearing the sounds of hell. Fear causes the unclean body to be covered in filth, and when one is delirious, what can one do?' Therefore, by contemplating these reasons, do not let external circumstances control you, but make a firm decision, because death is certain, and at the time of death, there is no other protection or refuge except for the Dharma. This principle is also clearly stated in the 'Sutra of Admonishing the King': 'Great King, just as a lion, as the king of beasts, enters a herd of animals, seizes an animal, and acts as it pleases. That animal is seized by great power and cannot resist. Great King, similarly, pierced by the arrow of the Lord of Death, losing pride, having no protection, no refuge, no relatives or friends, the body decays, the joints separate, the flesh and blood dry up, the body is tormented by disease, the mouth is dry, the complexion changes, the hands and feet tremble, unable to act, having no strength. The body is covered with saliva, mucus, urine, and excrement. The senses of the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind cease to function. Hiccups occur incessantly, and a rough sound is emitted. Doctors give up treatment, and medicines, food, and drink are all mixed together and discarded. Lying on the final bed, sinking into the continuation of the beginningless cycle of birth, old age, and death. Life is only a little bit left, threatened by the messengers of Yama, falling under the control of demons. Breathing stops, the mouth and nose are open, the teeth are clenched. One begs for alms, and from the existence of karma, one is reborn again.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
