In general, these teachings are explained in three areas. According to the Donma (Seven Points), they are: 1. Preliminaries, showing the practice of the foundation. 2. Main part, training the two Bodhichitta (mind of enlightenment). 3. Transforming adverse conditions into the path of enlightenment. 4. Showing the condensation of a lifetime's practice. 5. The measure of having trained the mind. 6. The vows of mind training. 7. The precepts of mind training, which are seven in total. As a method for quickly receiving blessings, Guru Yoga is essential. The first point is that from the Oral Transmission Vajra Verses, there is 'First, train the preliminaries.' When practicing the meaning of this, there are five key points: As a method for quickly receiving blessings, Guru Yoga is essential; as a method for generating the intention to extract the essence of life, precious human rebirth is essential; as a method for quickly urging diligence, impermanence of death is essential; as a method for not confusing what to adopt and abandon, the law of Karma is essential; as a method for generating extraordinary renunciation, meditation on the faults of samsara is essential. Although the explanation of Guru Yoga does not arise from the Characteristic Vehicle, relying on a spiritual mentor is the root of the path, which is explained in all the upper and lower vehicles. As it says in 'Letter to a Friend': 'Relying on a virtuous friend is the beginning of pure conduct, because the Buddha has fully accomplished this. By relying on holy beings, many have attained peace.' Therefore, relying on a spiritual mentor in the proper way is considered complete pure conduct, and its benefits are explained in relation to past deeds. So, what kind of spiritual mentor should one rely on? As it says in 'Ornament of the Sutras': 'A spiritual mentor should be disciplined, peaceful, extremely peaceful, possess superior qualities, be diligent, rich in scripture, realized, skilled in speaking, loving, and have abandoned weariness.' This means he should possess ten characteristics: disciplining the senses through the training of higher morality; pacifying the mind through the training of higher concentration; pacifying afflictions through the training of higher wisdom; possessing qualities superior to his students; having enthusiasm and diligence for benefiting others; being rich in the three baskets of scripture; having the wisdom to realize the true nature; being skilled in teaching the Dharma to others; having pure motivation, not seeking fame and gain, but being full of love; not being tired by the difficulties of teaching, thus having abandoned weariness. Similarly, 'Bodhichitta-caryavatara' says: 'Always rely on a virtuous spiritual mentor, who is skilled in the great meaning, possesses the supreme conduct of a Bodhisattva, and would not give it up even for the sake of life.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is said that a virtuous spiritual friend who is skilled in the meaning of the Great Vehicle and abides in the conduct of a Bodhisattva should be cherished even more than one's own life. 1-684 As for how to rely on (a virtuous spiritual friend), it is said in that very text, in the 'Narrative of Glorious Birth': 'One should learn as one relies on a lama.' That is to say, when the boy named Glorious Birth and the girl named Glorious Wisdom, who were at the gate of the city of Delightful Mind, asked Bodhisattva Norsang about the precepts of a Bodhisattva, they explained in detail the manner of relying on a virtuous spiritual friend and the reasons for it. Among them, it was said: 'Son of good family, a virtuous spiritual friend is like a mother because they generate the seed of Buddhahood; like a father because they accomplish vast benefits; like a mother because they protect from all sins; like a teacher because they cause one to comprehend the precepts of a Bodhisattva; like a guide because they lead one into the path of the perfections; like a doctor because they liberate one from the disease of afflictions; like a snow mountain because they cause the medicine of wisdom to increase; like a hero because they protect from all fears; like a boatman because they deliver one from the great river of samsara; a virtuous spiritual friend is like a helmsman because they lead one to the island of the precious jewel of omniscient wisdom. 1-685 Son of good family, therefore, you should constantly keep this in mind and respectfully serve your virtuous spiritual friend.' With a mind like the earth, which can bear all burdens without weariness, and with the similes mentioned before: with a mind like an unshakeable vajra; with a mind like a surrounding mountain, which cannot be moved by all sufferings; with a mind like a servant who obeys all wishes; with a mind like a disciple who does not violate all instructions; with a mind like a worldly person who does not despise all actions; with a mind like a mother who is not weary of all afflictions; with a mind like a broom that has abandoned pride and arrogance; with a mind like a vehicle that can bear heavy burdens; with a mind like an immovable mountain; with a mind like a dog that does not get angry; with a mind like a castrated bull king that has eliminated all conceit; with a mind like a virtuous son who looks to the face of his virtuous spiritual friend; with a mind like a young king who does not disobey the commands of the Dharma king, one should respectfully serve one's virtuous spiritual friend. 'Son of good family, you should regard yourself as a patient, your virtuous spiritual friend as a doctor, the instructions as medicine, and diligent practice as healing the disease.' As said before, regard yourself as a guest. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
