Transforming Adversity into the Path: That is to say, no matter what unfavorable internal or external circumstances arise, one should strive to transform them into aids for cultivating the two aspects of Bodhicitta (the mind of enlightenment). In particular, 'First, train in what is coarse,' meaning, recognizing that the primary or coarse thing to be abandoned is self-cherishing, one should practice all the Dharma, including the two aspects of Bodhicitta, as an antidote to counteract and eradicate self-cherishing. If one grasps the essence of these instructions on how to apply the path, just as when going to Serlingpa (Golden Island), one cannot find a stone to throw at a dog, there will be no obstacles to mind training. Therefore, in this time of rampant adverse conditions, one should exert oneself from the depths of one's heart. Instructions Condensed into a Single Lifetime of Practice: The fourth is teaching the condensation of a lifetime's practice, which is: 'The essence of the pith instructions, combine with the five powers.' That is, the first is the power of aspiration: From now until this month, this year, until death, and until enlightenment, I shall not be separated from the two aspects of Bodhicitta. One should repeatedly generate a strong aspiration. The second is the power of familiarization: With great enthusiasm, through the respectful actions of body, speech, and mind, exhausting oneself, and through the constant practice of cultivating the two aspects of Bodhicitta like a continuous stream. The third is the power of the white seed: With the aim of generating and increasing the two aspects of Bodhicitta, one should accumulate merit by making offerings to the Lama (spiritual teacher) and the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), etc., to the best of one's ability. The fourth is the power of reproach: Remembering the faults of self-cherishing as previously explained, and as stated in the *Bodhicharyavatara* (Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life): 'Even if gods and demigods, all become my enemies and seek to harm me, they cannot cast me into the fires of Avici (uninterrupted suffering). The powerful enemy of afflictions, when encountered, can turn even Mount Meru (the central world-mountain) into ashes, and in an instant, throw me into it.' This explains the great harm of self-cherishing and other afflictions. Also, as stated in the same text: 'My enemy, the afflictions, has existed since beginningless time. Other enemies are like that, unable to endure for long and eventually dispersing.' This explains the long duration of its harm, and one should repeatedly contemplate the faults of self-cherishing, etc. The fifth is the power of supplication: At the end of all virtuous actions, generally... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

May this pure dedication and aspiration, free from the three spheres (no agent, no action, no object), and especially may we never be separated from the two aspects of Bodhicitta (Tibetan: བྱང་ཆུབ་ཀྱི་སེམས་, Sanskrit Devanagari: बोधिचित्त, Sanskrit Roman transliteration: bodhicitta, literal meaning: mind of enlightenment) in all lifetimes. Through the three doors of body, speech, and mind, along with enjoyment and roots of virtue, may we benefit limitless sentient beings. May we be able to transform adverse conditions into the path of enlightenment. And so on, strive for pure aspirations. As it is said in the sutras: 'All phenomena are dependent on conditions, they abide firmly in the root of intention. Whatever aspiration is planted, the fruit will be of the same kind.' Therefore, how should practitioners of this tradition practice the instructions of 'Da Kham'? The essential instruction for the transference of consciousness in the Great Vehicle is: 'The five powers are crucial, and conduct should be cherished.' This means that from now until the time of death, one should remember the instructions that include the practice of the five powers and make a firm resolution. One should practice this continuously every time before falling asleep. Applying it in practice means that at the time of death, one should strive to intensify the practice of the five powers, especially the power of white seeds, accomplishing the six perfections: giving without attachment to possessions, offering to the Three Jewels, etc.; maintaining ethical discipline by ensuring one is not tainted by sins through confession and protection; practicing patience by eliminating resentment towards those who harbor malice, and having no animosity towards anything; generating joy and diligence in accomplishing virtue, such as practicing Bodhicitta; maintaining equanimity in meditation by abiding in samadhi with the two aspects of Bodhicitta; and examining the meaning of reality with wisdom. Next are the distinctions in conduct: At the time of death, place the right side of the body downwards, support the right cheek with the right hand, block the right nostril with the little finger, and allow the breath to flow through the left nostril. Whichever of the two aspects of Bodhicitta one is more familiar with, one should die and be reborn in that state. In short, the main obstacle to 'Da Kham' is attachment and clinging to one's dwelling, body, and enjoyments in this life, so one should strive to abandon these with great effort. Furthermore, without relying on external arrangements, one should keep the key points of mind training in mind: Recognizing that the objects of attachment are meaningless, and motivated by Bodhicitta, etc., one should relinquish one's dwelling, body, and enjoyments, whether they are taken away by an enemy, stolen by a friend, or deceived by trickery. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
