Furthermore, the mind is not separate from it, but is itself a false appearance. How then can it be examined that it is the appearance of various forms such as form? By examining the nature of the mind separately with wisdom in this way, in the ultimate sense, the mind is not perceived within, nor is it perceived outside, nor is it perceived as both. The past mind is not perceived, nor is the future, nor is the present. As it says, 'When the mind arises, it does not come from anywhere; when it ceases, it does not go anywhere.' The mind is ungraspable, unshowable, and non-material. Thus, knowing all appearances to be the magical display of the mind, and examining the nature of the mind with the reasoning that measures the ultimate truth, we are certain that it is free from all elaborations such as inner and outer, three times, arising and ceasing. Third, cutting off elaboration on the antidote to meditation, which is 'the antidote itself is liberated in its own place.' As it says in the Stages of Meditation, 'In this way, from perfect discrimination itself, if the fire of knowing exactly as it is arises, like fire produced by rubbing wood, it will burn the wood of thought.' Thus the Blessed One spoke. The Noble Jewel Cloud also spoke, 'Therefore, the one skilled in faults should practice yoga in emptiness in order to be free from all elaborations. By meditating on emptiness a great deal, wherever the mind wanders and wherever the mind is manifestly delighted, if one seeks the nature of those places, one realizes emptiness. If one examines what the mind is, one realizes emptiness. If one seeks the nature of what the mind realizes, one realizes emptiness.' 'Having realized it in that way, one enters into signless yoga.' Thus it appears. As it is said by quoting the sutra, when meditating after examining the object and the mind, if one becomes attached to the antidote of meditation, by thoroughly examining the cause and effect of that itself, one is certain that it is empty from the beginning. Second, taking it into experience through meditation, which is 'placing the nature of the path in the state of the basis of all.' Generally, the basis of all is said to be one of the eight collections of consciousness, but here, as those who explain the path and fruit explain, the basis of all is called emptiness, the nature of the union of awareness and emptiness, because it is the basis of all phenomena of samsara and nirvana. Therefore, as Jowo (Atisha) said, 'In the nature of reality that is free from elaboration, also place awareness in a state that is free from elaboration.' As he said, in the nature of the object of reality that is free from all elaboration, the subject --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When entering the state of non-elaboration through the method of cutting off elaborations as described above, one should remain in equanimity, free from other thoughts, contractions, efforts, etc. This method is also as stated in the *Stages of Meditation*: 'Thus, entering into the selflessness of persons and phenomena, since there is nothing else to examine, one is free from thought and analysis, without speech, and the mind naturally enters into a single state, without contrivance, and thus clearly meditates and abides in suchness.' Abiding in this, one should not let the mind wander. From the method of eliminating dullness and agitation, understand as previously explained. Third, to enhance through conduct, that is, 'The seven are mental events of discrimination, therefore they should be abandoned.' That is to say, the six consciousnesses and the discrimination that grasps at self and what belongs to self, plus the seventh consciousness, which is designated as the afflicted mind, along with their respective retinue of mental factors, are called non-veridical conceptualizations, as the *Middle Beyond Extremes* states: 'Non-veridical conceptualization is mind, and mental factors, of the three realms.' When such discriminations scatter and enter into objects, do not follow after the appearance of truth and the clinging to truth, but examine well with reason the object of scattering and the nature of the discriminator's discrimination, and thereby be certain that it is non-elaborate. Practicing well again and again with such means, all the scattering and gathering of conceptual thoughts will become conducive to the arising of non-elaborate wisdom, therefore it is called enhancement. Third, showing the measure of accomplishment, as stated in the *Stages of Meditation*: 'In the state of *shamatha*, examining that very thing is *vipashyana*.' And, 'Having obtained physical pliancy and mental pliancy, abiding in that, abandoning other thoughts, as the thought of the Dharma, in the inner mind, it becomes the object of *samadhi*, like images, each knowing, giving rise to faith.' Like this, for the object of *samadhi*, the image, distinguishing the meaning of what is to be known, and distinguishing in detail, completely knowing, completely distinguishing, tolerance, desire, distinguishing differences, observing, thinking, etc., is called *vipashyana*. Thus, a Bodhisattva is skilled in *vipashyana*.' Thus, combining the scriptural authority of the *Sandhinirmocana Sutra*, possessing physical and mental pliancy. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
