Practice: The method of focusing on the object, and the standard of accomplishment. Firstly, in the 'Middle Stages of Meditation', it is mentioned: 'What are the elements of Śamatha (calm abiding)?' 'Dwelling in a suitable place, having few desires, being content, completely abandoning many activities, having pure morality, and completely abandoning the conceptual thoughts of desires, etc.' 'Having five qualities, one should know it as a suitable place: in order to obtain clothing, food, etc. without difficulty, it is easy to obtain; since unruly people, enemies, etc. do not reside, it is a good residence; since it is a disease-free land, it is a good land; since there are virtuous friends who share the same view, it is a good friend; since it is not crowded with many people during the day and the sound is small at night, it is excellent.' 'What is having few desires?' Not being particularly attached to good or many Dharma robes, etc. 'What is contentment?' Always being content with whatever Dharma robes, etc. are obtained. 'What is completely abandoning many activities?' Completely abandoning evil deeds such as trading, completely abandoning excessive interaction with householders and renunciates, as well as practicing medicine, astrology, etc. 'What is pure morality?' In both sets of vows, not breaking the precepts of naturally and co-emergent transgressions; even if broken due to carelessness, quickly repenting and acting according to the Dharma; even for the defeat (Parajika) in the Hearer's vows, which is said to be irreparable, one should have remorse and the intention not to do it again. Because the mind that committed the deed is perceived as being without inherent existence, or because one is accustomed to all phenomena being without inherent existence. Therefore, it can be said that his morality is pure.' As it is said in the scriptures: 'Regarding desires, one should consider the many faults in this life and the next, and abandon the conceptual thoughts about them.' Having understood this, one should strive to accumulate these conducive conditions, because without these conducive conditions, the Śamatha (calm abiding) that pleases the wise cannot be achieved. Just as Dīpaṃkara (藏文:མར་མེ་མཛད།,梵文天城体:दीपंकर,梵文罗马拟音:Dīpaṃkara,汉语字面意思:燃灯) said: 'If the limbs of Śamatha are deficient, even if one strives to meditate, even for thousands of years, Samadhi will not be achieved.' Secondly, regarding the method of focusing on the object, in the 'Middle Stages of Meditation', it is mentioned: 'The yogi should practice...' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the early morning, first, having completely finished all that needs to be done, after urinating and defecating, in a pleasant place free from thorns, thinking, 'I shall establish all sentient beings in the essence of enlightenment,' generate the vast mind of leading all beings to liberation, manifest great compassion. Prostrate with five limbs to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas residing in the ten directions. Place images of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, etc., in front, or elsewhere, and offer and praise them to the best of your ability. Confess your own sins and rejoice in the merits of all beings. On a very soft and comfortable cushion, sit in the vajra posture of Vairochana (a full lotus position) or a half-lotus position. The eyes should be neither fully open nor fully closed, but focused on the tip of the nose. The body should be neither too bent nor too straight, but upright and straight, and mindfulness should be kept within. Then, the shoulders should be kept level, the head neither too high nor too low, nor tilted to one side, but the nose should be aligned with the navel. The teeth and lips should also be kept in a natural state. The tongue should be placed against the root of the teeth. The breath should not be noisy, rough, or hurried. In whatever way possible, it should be done slowly and naturally, without being noticed. As it is said in the scriptures. Then, as Lord Atisha said, 'On any object of focus, one should place the mind on virtue.' Therefore, it is permissible to place the mind on any object of focus, whether with or without characteristics. But here, according to the Bodhipathapradipa: 'In one way, one should place the mind on the image of the Buddha as seen and heard.' As it is said in the sacred Samadhiraja Sutra: 'With a body like the color of gold, the protector of the world is beautiful in all places. Whoever places their mind on that object, that Bodhisattva is called Samadhi.' Thus, having placed the mind on the object of focus that one desires, one should repeatedly and continuously focus on it. As it is said in the scriptures with evidence, one should focus the mind on the body of the Buddha. In this way, not only is the abiding of the mind accomplished, but also the inconceivable benefits of recollecting the Buddha arise. As recorded in many sutras. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
