The method of taking in. Bestowing this wish-fulfilling treasure upon the fortunate ones. Third, alternating the practice of giving and taking: mainly alternating between the above two meditation sessions for practice. To make these familiar and stable, as the breath enters, visualize all the sins and sufferings of others merging into oneself in the form of black light; as the breath goes out, visualize all one's own happiness and virtues maturing in others. Count in numbers of hundreds, thousands, etc. Furthermore, some texts say: 'The order of taking begins with oneself.' According to this, it means taking upon oneself the suffering that is destined to mature in one's later years, now; and taking upon oneself the suffering that is destined to mature in the next life, in this life. This is a method to gradually familiarize the mind. In addition, the 'Bodhicharyavatara' says: 'Considering the inferior as oneself, and considering others as oneself, with a non-discriminating mind, cultivate jealousy and pride.' etc., through these methods, one can also destroy self-cherishing. In short, if one does not practice taking, one cannot cut the bonds of self-cherishing; if one does not practice giving, one cannot complete the accumulation of merit; if one does not practice alternating, one cannot easily achieve accomplishment. Therefore, one should strive to practice through these three meditation sessions, because this is the essence of the Mahayana path. The reasons for this have already been explained. Furthermore, the 'Avatamsaka Sutra' says: 'Transform the suffering of beings into oneself, transform oneself into the body by which all beings live.' The 'Supreme Conduct Aspiration Prayer' says: 'The suffering of hells, the world of Yama, and the suffering of animals, the suffering of humans, the endless mass of suffering of beings, may they descend upon me, may beings be happy!' The 'Maitreya Offering Prayer' says: 'From the peak of existence down to the Avici hell, and in all the immeasurable worlds, may all the gods, demigods, and the great assembly of hungry ghosts be happy, may I take their suffering!' The 'Bodhicharyavatara' says: 'Therefore, in order to pacify one's own harm, and to pacify the suffering of others, one should give oneself to others, and hold others as oneself.' etc., these are the methods of meditation. Having thus decided, one should strive to benefit others, because the words of the Buddha are not deceiving, and its results will eventually be seen. If you have done these things in the past, then what difficulty is there in becoming a Buddha?' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Are you well and prosperous? It is impossible to change in this situation.' Therefore, one should understand all the teachings that say the fruit of altruism is not deceiving. If someone thinks it is impossible to develop the mind of cherishing others, it is not so, because it can be achieved through habituation. As it is said in the *Bodhicaryāvatāra*: 'Just as this body, which is without self, through habituation, the thought of 'I' arises, so too, for other sentient beings, through habituation, why wouldn't the thought of 'I' arise?' One should destroy the root of a hundred faults—the mind of self-cherishing—through various means, and diligent ones should cultivate the Bodhicitta (enlightenment mind) of benefiting others, which is the source of all happiness and well-being, with many efforts. Second, the practice in the post-meditation period: The essential instructions for the post-meditation period are summarized as: three objects, three poisons, three roots of virtue, and training in all activities with words. That is, based on the three objects—pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral—the three poisons of attachment, aversion, and ignorance arise respectively. These should be transformed into the three roots of virtue. Specifically, when attachment arises, contemplate that the attachment of all sentient beings ripens upon me, and may they be endowed with the perfect root of virtue free from attachment. Apply the same to the other two (aversion and ignorance). In all activities, one should also train the mind through words. As the *Ratnāvalī* says: 'May their sins ripen upon me, and may all my virtues ripen upon them.' The *Bodhicaryāvatāra* says: 'Whatever suffering there is for beings, may all of it ripen upon me. Through all the virtues of the Bodhisattvas, may beings enjoy happiness.' The *Instructions on Power and Dominion* says: 'May the suffering of all sentient beings ripen upon me, and may they attain happiness through my virtue.' Thus, one should train in the Bodhicitta of exchanging self and others. Furthermore, the *Sūtrālaṃkāra* says: 'When a Bodhisattva acts, in whatever way he engages in the various objects of the senses, in that very way, with words that accord with reason, he manifestly acts for the benefit of sentient beings.' One should practice as taught in the *General Sūtra on the Purity of Objects*. To keep the language concise, one should understand it by following the condensed meaning of that sūtra composed by the teacher Ye-shes-snying-po. For example, when a Bodhisattva is staying at home, one should recite and contemplate from the depths of one's heart: 'May all sentient beings attain the great city of liberation.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
