Falsehood, and speaking words that cause discord among others, dividing their friendship, is divisive speech; speaking harsh words that pierce the hearts of others with loud and aggressive tones, driven by hatred and the like, regardless of whether they are true or not, is harsh speech; speaking many meaningless and nonsensical words, interrupting one's own and others' virtuous deeds, and speaking aimlessly without purpose, is idle chatter. These are the four non-virtuous actions of speech. Driven by desire, wishing that others' possessions and power would become one's own, desiring to obtain the perfections of others, is covetousness; driven by hatred, wishing that someone would be harmed by others, hoping they would suffer greatly, is malice; driven by ignorance, doubting the existence of karma and its effects, the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), and whether good deeds lead to happiness and bad deeds lead to suffering, even when teachers proclaim it, is wrong view. These are the three non-virtuous actions of mind, totaling ten non-virtuous actions. Second, the results of these non-virtuous actions are twofold: temporary results and ultimate results. The first is: short life, poverty, one's own family members treating one as an enemy, being slandered by others, discord with one's friends, hearing unpleasant sounds, others not believing one's words to be true, considering them unfounded, hopes being fruitless, encountering great fear, views becoming completely distorted, and so on. The second, the ultimate result, is: committing small non-virtuous actions leads to rebirth as an animal, medium ones as a hungry ghost, and large ones as a hell being. Third, in this way, having been driven by the three poisons (greed, hatred, and ignorance) to commit these non-virtuous actions, there is no escape from the results of the lower realms. Therefore, no matter what, even if it costs one's life, one must make a firm commitment and vow not to do these non-virtuous actions and abandon them. Second, contemplating virtuous actions also includes contemplating the nature of the action, contemplating its results, and being advised to practice it. First, abandoning the ten non-virtuous actions mentioned earlier, and being driven by non-attachment, non-hatred, and non-ignorance, striving to accomplish the ten virtuous actions as much as possible. Second, the results of these virtuous actions are also twofold: temporary results and ultimate results. The first is: long life, great wealth, family members and others acting in accordance with one's wishes, and so on. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Universally gaining a good reputation, becoming friendly and harmonious, having clear senses, powerful speech, fulfilling wishes in the heart, being fearless, having pure views, and so on. The ultimate result is: by practicing the ten virtues in small, medium, and large ways, one can attain the states of Shravaka (Hearer), Pratyekabuddha (Solitary Realizer), and unsurpassed Bodhi (Enlightenment). The third aspect is: like this, even if one attains the state of a Shravaka from practicing virtue, and is liberated from the fear of Samsara (cyclic existence) and the lower realms, one should still think, 'In any case, I must strive to practice virtue.' Regarding the third aspect, the thought of indeterminate (neutral) actions, there are three parts. First, the nature of the action is: eating food, working, etc., with a neutral attitude, without the motivation of either virtue or non-virtue. Second, its result is: neither able to produce happiness nor suffering, but enjoying and accepting working, etc., with a neutral attitude. Third, transforming it into a virtuous action is: 1-655 It changes due to the power of motivation. For example, even when eating food, one can think, 'To nourish the worms in the body,' or 'To strengthen the body so that I can engage in study and contemplation, etc.' Even when walking, one can walk for the purpose of meeting the Lama (spiritual teacher) or for the sake of the sacred Dharma. Or, one can think that there are statues of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas on the right side, and turn the strongest part of the body, the right side, towards them, and think of circumambulating them. Third, if attached to one's own benefit, one is not a Bodhisattva. Third, if attached to one's own benefit, one is not a Bodhisattva. The meaning of this is: as explained before, if one sees all of Samsara as suffering, and practices various small and large virtuous deeds in order to be liberated from such suffering, even if one attains the state of a Shravaka or Pratyekabuddha, one still has not perfected one's own benefit, nor can one greatly benefit others, and it becomes an obstacle to attaining complete Buddhahood. Therefore, do not only pursue one's own benefit, but strive to attain complete Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings. And this will not arise from incomplete causes and conditions, or from error. For example, in winter, like when warmth and moisture are not present, even if one sows rice seeds, they will not grow. 1-656 Wanting rice but sowing barley, the rice crop will not grow. Wanting a rice crop, one must have the rice seed as the cause, and water, fertilizer, and warmth as the conditions, then it will grow. Similarly, complete Bodhi arises from great compassion. The root is Bodhicitta (the mind of enlightenment). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
