To counteract clinging to appearances, it is necessary to cultivate both Shamatha (tranquility) and Vipassana (insight). As the scripture says, 'Through Vipassana, which is fully endowed with Shamatha, one knows how to destroy the faults of afflictions.' There are three practices here: practicing Shamatha, practicing Vipassana, and practicing their union. First is the practice of Shamatha: In a secluded and pleasant place, ruled by a Dharma-abiding king and free from harm, without the noise of people and the disturbances of enemies, etc., which are obstacles to meditation, sit on a comfortable cushion. Before each session, take refuge and generate Bodhicitta (the mind of enlightenment). Sit in the Vajra posture (legs crossed), hands in the meditation mudra, tongue slightly touching the palate, neck slightly bent, spine straight, eyes half-open and half-closed, maintaining a moderate state for meditation. As the scripture says, 'Relying on the correct posture, in order to let the mind rest on the mind.' Therefore, the essence of Shamatha is to focus the mind single-pointedly on any object of focus, whether internal or external. In the chapter on 'Meditation' in Shantideva's 'A Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life', he explains two types of Shamatha: outwardly directed Shamatha and inwardly directed Shamatha. The first is: focusing the mind on an external object of focus, such as a pillar or a black stone. The inward focus is: 'Cutting off the activity of thoughts of the three times.' Therefore, do not chase after the past, do not welcome the future, do not modify the present, abandon clinging to external objects, let awareness look at its own nature, and focus on this. In the 'Samadhiraja Sutra', it speaks of focusing on the body of the Buddha. Although previously focusing on stones, etc., was a method to make the mind focus on one point, if one focuses on the body of the Buddha, one can remember the Buddha and accumulate great merit. Therefore, one can visualize in front a precious throne, with various lotuses and moon cushions, Shakyamuni Buddha's body like pure gold, the right hand in the earth-touching mudra, the left hand in the meditation mudra, wearing red Dharma robes, sitting in the Vajra posture. Focus on his body, especially the white hair between the eyebrows. Or visualize Amitabha Buddha, body red, with the meditation mudra, the cushion, etc., the same as before. It is said that this is also acceptable. Therefore, practicing Shamatha before practicing Vipassana is the meaning of 'first seek Shamatha'. If one can become well-acquainted with Shamatha and can keep the mind stable on any object of focus for many years. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

However, mere Śamatha (calm abiding) is not sufficient. To eradicate afflictions from their root, one must cultivate Vipaśyanā (insight meditation), using the wisdom that realizes emptiness to analyze the true nature of phenomena, both internal and external, thereby realizing the mind that is free from extremes such as existence and non-existence, permanence and annihilation. The previously mentioned Śamatha is a method for focusing the mind on a single point. Subsequently, to realize the meaning of Vipaśyanā, the mind must be placed on a single point of Śamatha. Therefore, the cultivation of Vipaśyanā is divided into three aspects: 1. Establishing that external appearances are created by the mind; 2. Establishing that the appearances of the mind are like illusions; 3. Establishing that illusions are without inherent existence. First, the various appearances of external objects, such as horses, elephants, men and women, walls, vases, blankets, etc., do not arise without cause, nor are they created by Īśvara (自在天) or Brahma (大梵天), nor do they arise from the four elements or particles, nor are they created by the emanations of the Buddha, but rather they arise from the power of the habitual imprints placed on one's own mind since beginningless time. The creator of all this is the mind; there is no other creator apart from the mind. Meditate in this way. Second, as it is said in the scriptures: 'Magicians conjure up various forms, such as horses, elephants, and chariots. Although they appear vividly, these appearances are not real. Understand that all phenomena are like this.' Just as the various external appearances mentioned earlier are like dreams, like illusions. For example, in a dream, one experiences various sufferings, but upon awakening, everyone knows that they are not real. Similarly, everything appears merely conventionally, like reflections in a mirror. Generate certainty and continuously meditate in this way. Third, in this way, the various appearances that appear like illusions are merely conventional appearances, so they do not obstruct appearances. However, if analyzed, in ultimate reality, not even the measure of a hundredth part of a hair tip exists. Meditate in this way. Third, combined meditation: Through establishing the appearances of external objects as created by the mind, etc., gradually ascertain and realize emptiness, which is free from all extremes of conceptual elaboration, and be certain of it. The wisdom that realizes in this way and the true nature of objects are inseparable, like water into water, or oil into oil, becoming one taste. Abide in this single taste with a focused mind and meditate. By becoming accustomed to such continuity, compassion and other qualities arise, led by emptiness, for sentient beings who have not realized in this way, and attachment to real entities is abandoned. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
