It arises from the mind of loving-kindness. It is perfected by being skilled in skillful means.' Therefore, to practice its meaning, one must cultivate loving-kindness, cultivate compassion, cultivate the mind of enlightenment, and learn the conduct of these. First, there are four: cultivating towards relatives, cultivating towards neutral persons, cultivating towards enemies, and cultivating towards all sentient beings. The first has three: recognizing as mother, remembering kindness, and cultivating loving-kindness towards her. First, taking one's own current mother as an example, she has not only been a mother now, but has been a mother for many lifetimes. As it is said: 'The ultimate number of mothers is like the seeds of the acacia tree, even if counted with the earth, it cannot be exhausted.' It is also said: 'The milk given by one sentient being, even the four oceans cannot contain it.' 'The father done by one sentient being, the horses and cattle given, even surpasses the Brahma world.' Second, remembering kindness: counting the immeasurable benefits given by the mother countless times. From conception to nine or ten months, enduring the heaviness and fatigue of the body. Then, at the time of birth, enduring the suffering of facing the separation of body and mind. After birth, cherishing the child who does not understand anything and cannot do anything, like a worm, with a loving heart. Looking with loving eyes, tasting delicious food with the tongue, wiping away impurities with the hands, putting fingers in the mouth. Providing food, clothing, and so on as much as possible, removing all harm. After growing up, giving precious wealth that can even be exchanged for one's life. Teaching all kinds of knowledge to be learned, such as reading and writing. In short, think about all the kindnesses she has given, and how she has protected you from all harm. Third, cultivating loving-kindness: 'Benefiting beings is called great loving-kindness.' Therefore, the essence of loving-kindness is the thought of wishing sentient beings to have happiness and the causes of happiness. Therefore, generating the thought: 'May this kind mother have the causes of happiness,' which is related to generating the mind of enlightenment; 'How wonderful it would be if she had happiness and the causes of happiness,' which is related to aspiration; 'May she have happiness and the causes of happiness,' which is related to prayer. In this way, cultivate without distraction and recite the words. In this way, just as one recognizes the root mother as mother, remembers kindness, and cultivates loving-kindness, similarly, transfer the object to neutral persons, enemies, and all sentient beings, and cultivate. In this way, after becoming proficient through cultivating loving-kindness, its power will generate compassion, because 'the river of compassion originates from loving-kindness.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thus it is said. Therefore, the essence of cultivating compassion is: to protect all those who suffer, which is called great compassion. As it is said, it is the mind that cannot bear to see the suffering of sentient beings and desires them to be free from it. In this regard, first cultivate it towards relatives, then towards neutral parties between enemies and friends, then towards enemies, and then towards all sentient beings. The first case has three aspects, as in the case of recognizing the mother, remembering her kindness, and cultivating loving-kindness. When cultivating compassion, visualize your root mother, whether she is alive or deceased, clearly in front of you. Think in your heart: 'My kind mother is suffering and separated from happiness, how pitiful! May she be free from suffering and the cause of suffering!' Observing the actual situation of the mother, she is suffering from suffering and the cause of suffering, and is experiencing these sufferings, how pitiful! 'May she be free from suffering!' Combine this with the generation of Bodhicitta, as in the case of cultivating loving-kindness. Then, gradually shift the object to neutral parties, enemies, and all sentient beings, generating genuine compassion and continuously cultivating it. After generating compassion in this way, by the power of compassion, Bodhicitta can be generated. Because compassion is the root of Bodhicitta.' Thus it is said. Therefore, after cultivating compassion, cultivate conventional Bodhicitta, which is the exchange of self and others. As in: 'May the suffering of all sentient beings ripen upon me, and may my merits enable them to attain happiness!' May all the suffering and unhappiness of limitless sentient beings, like space, ripen upon me! May all sentient beings attain all my merits, happiness, and goodness!' Recite the words and cultivate them deeply from the heart. Fourth, learning these practices, in general, the conduct of a Bodhisattva is to abandon actions that harm others and to strive to accomplish whatever benefits they can. In particular, to mature oneself, one must practice the six perfections; to mature others, one must gather them with the four means of gathering, etc. These are explained in detail in the Sutra of Akashagarbha, the Compendium of Trainings, the Bodhicharyavatara, and the Jewel Garland of Advice to the King, and should be practiced accordingly. Fourth, if there is clinging, it is not the view. Fourth, if there is clinging, it is not the view. The meaning of this statement is: even if a sublime conventional Bodhicitta is generated, if it is accompanied by clinging to reality, one will fall into the extremes of permanence and annihilation and will not be liberated. Therefore, regarding phenomena, --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
