The gods and humans, as well as the hells, animals, and hungry ghosts, are not good places to be born. Know that these rebirths are the doors to many sufferings.' Thus it is said. Secondly, the general faults of samsara, if described in detail, are inexhaustible. In short, it is the source of poverty due to desire, and many sufferings such as death and aging. Be weary of samsara and listen to some of its faults. Thus it is said. The source of all suffering, to mention a few in summary from these sources, includes the faults of high and low status in samsara, the faults of impermanence, the faults of taking countless bodies, the faults of not being satisfied with desires, the faults of being alone and without help, and so on. First, the faults of high and low status are: 'Having been Indra (Śakra), worthy of worship by a hundred gods, one may fall back to earth due to karma. Having been a Chakravartin (universal monarch), one may become a servant in samsara.' Like that. The faults of impermanence are: 'A father becomes a son, a mother becomes a wife, an enemy becomes a friend, and vice versa. Therefore, there is no certainty in samsara.' Like that. The faults of taking countless bodies are: 'The pile of bones accumulated by each individual is as high as Mount Meru.' Thus it is said. From the *Nirvana Sutra*: 'The heads that have been cut off in mutual disputes, if piled up, would exceed the height of the Brahma world.' And so on. The faults of not being satisfied with desires are: 'Each person has drunk more milk than the four great oceans, yet still chases after desires, endlessly transmigrating, and will drink even more milk.' Thus it is said. 'Even if a rain of gold coins were to fall, it would not satisfy the desires of the greedy.' And so on. The faults of being alone and without help are: In the *Bodhicharyavatara* it says: 'One is born alone, and one dies alone.' Like that. There are also the faults of repeatedly taking rebirth: 'The ashes of mothers are piled up as high as the Himalayas, and the number of rosary beads made from the bones cannot be counted even with the entire earth.' Thus it is said. Therefore, no matter where one is born in samsara, there is only suffering. Therefore, all of this is impermanent, selfless, without refuge, without help, and without a place to stay. May you, the most excellent people, be disgusted with this meaningless samsara like a bubble. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you think and understand in this way, you will not desire the three realms (srid gsum, trailokya) even in your dreams. Or, like abandoning attachment to a bastard son, or like a burnt bird, or like a merchant on the island of Rakshasas, if you develop renunciation, then you must practice the Dharma that liberates you from it. Without practicing the Dharma, you cannot liberate yourself, and others' practice will not help. Therefore, liberation depends on oneself, and others cannot provide any help in this regard. As it is said: 'Those who possess learning, discipline, and meditation,' 'Should be mindful of the four truths Therefore, one must strive on one's own. Although there are many Dharmas, there is none better than bodhicitta As it is said in the *Bodhicaryāvatāra*: 'The moment bodhicitta arises,' 'The wretched beings imprisoned in the prison of samsara (འཁོར་བ, saṃsāra), are called the sons of the Sugatas (བདེ་གཤེགས, sugata),' 'And are revered by the world, including gods and humans.' Also, as it is said in the *Resting in the Nature of Mind*: 'Any being,' 'Who, even for a moment, meditates on bodhicitta,' 'The accumulation of merit from that, even the Buddhas cannot enumerate.' Especially in the *Bodhicaryāvatāra*, it says: 'Whoever desires to quickly,' 'Protect themselves and others,' 'Should practice exchanging themselves with others,' 'This sacred secret.' Therefore, there is nothing better than exchanging oneself with others. Perhaps one might think, then isn't *Hevajra* (དགྱེས་རྡོར, Hevajra), or *Mahāmudrā* (ཕྱག་རྒྱ་ཆེན་པོ, Mahāmudrā), or *Emptiness* (སྟོང་པ་ཉིད, śūnyatā) better? It is said that in India, there was a yogi who practiced *Hevajra* and attained the state of stream-enterer Jowo (referring to Atiśa) said: 'That was because he was lucky; if not, he would have made a mistake.' Potowa also said the same, but someone was unhappy and reported to Dromtönpa (སྤྱན་སྔ་བ): 'Jowo said this.' Dromtönpa said: 'Oh, really?' Without bodhicitta, practicing *Hevajra* will also lead to hell, also to the realm of hungry ghosts, also to the realm of animals. Because without bodhicitta, those practices can also become the cause of evil realms. But bodhicitta does not change. Emptiness can also be the cause and condition for everything from hell to pratyekabuddha (རང་སངས་རྒྱས, pratyekabuddha). But bodhicitta, like the father's sperm, is the unique cause of Buddhahood, so it cannot change. It gives rise to all the Buddha's teachings, so it is like a seed.' Etc., the scriptures speak of many benefits of bodhicitta, so there is no better Dharma than this. If you practice other Dharmas and they arise in your mindstream, they can serve as antidotes. Just remembering the words of bodhicitta can serve as an antidote. It brings happiness. You will also not fall into the paths of śrāvakas (ཉན་རང, Śrāvaka) and pratyekabuddhas.
