As stated in the scriptures. Secondly, life has no fixed time, so one does not know when one will die. As stated in the *Abhidharmakośakārikā*: 'If the sound is unpleasant, life is empty; the second time is half-half abandonment.' Here it is uncertain, and finally ten years, initially immeasurable.' As it says. Thirdly, there are many causes of death, so one does not know when one will die. As stated in the *Ratnavali*: 'There is nothing that is not a cause of death.' It also says: 'The causes of death are many, but the causes of life are few. These themselves are also causes of death, so accumulate Dharma.' As it says. Therefore, because one does not know when one will die, one must strive to practice the Dharma. As stated in the *Bhadrakalpika Sutra*: 'Who knows that one will die tomorrow? One must start striving from today. The Lord of Death and Great Bliss are not your friends.' Also, as stated in the *Bodhicaryāvatāra*: 'The Lord of Death is unreliable, and will not stay whether one has finished or not, whether one is sick or not, no one can predict the sudden end of life.' Thirdly, nothing can help at the time of death, there are three situations: relatives and friends cannot help, wealth and utensils cannot help, and one's own body cannot help. In the first situation, as stated in the *Bodhicaryāvatāra*: 'I lie in bed, surrounded by many relatives and friends, but the pain of being killed, only I myself endure.' As it says. In the second situation, what is obtained cannot help, as stated in the *Bodhicaryāvatāra*: 'Even if one obtains much wealth and enjoys happiness for a long time, one goes away naked and empty-handed, just like being robbed by a thief.' Also, as stated in the *Story of the Seven Young Women*: 'The rulers of the earth vainly accumulate wealth in their homes, but they will lose it in an instant, only good deeds can guide the path.' As it says. In the third situation, the body cannot help, as stated in the *Bodhicaryāvatāra*: 'The flesh and bones that are born together will also decompose and separate.' As it says. If one does not understand impermanence, as stated in the *Bodhicaryāvatāra*: 'Because I did not know that I must abandon everything and leave, I committed various sins for the sake of those who are dear and not dear.' As it says. If one understands impermanence, as stated in the *Advice to the King Sutra*, knowing that only the Dharma is the protector, refuge, and reliance, one will strive to practice the Dharma, and because there is no better Dharma than Bodhicitta, one will strive to cultivate Bodhicitta. Third, contemplate the faults of samsara: wandering in samsara. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
