Because it is too little. Third, in the Sutra of the Collection of Flowers and other scriptures, and in the treatises of Nagarjuna and others, many metaphors are told, such as the turtle's neck fitting into a hole in a piece of wood. The 'Letter to a Friend' says: 'To drift in the vast ocean and for a turtle to meet with a yoke's hole, even more difficult is to obtain a human body. O King! Do not waste this hard-to-obtain human body, but diligently practice the excellent Dharma.' The 'Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life' says: 'Therefore, the Bhagavan said, like a turtle's neck entering a yoke's hole, a human body is extremely difficult to obtain.' It also says: 'The appearance of a Tathagata is extremely rare, and it is also difficult to obtain faith and a human body, and it is also difficult to practice virtue. When will one obtain this body?' The 'Admonition to Study' says: 'To show the path of the Sugata, to guide beings, and to have the great power of mind, which is the attainment of a human being, is difficult even for gods and dragons, let alone Asuras, Garudas, Gandharvas, Kinnaras, Mahoragas, and Kumbhandas?' The 'Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life' says: 'This leisure and endowment is extremely difficult to obtain. Having obtained the opportunity to accomplish the meaning of a human life, if it is not utilized, how can one obtain this perfection again in the future?' The 'Array of Trees' says: 'It is also difficult to be free from the eight unfree states, it is also difficult to obtain a human body, and it is even more difficult to have a leisure and endowment that is complete and without lack.' And so on, many sutras and treatises say that if one obtains such a difficult-to-obtain human body but does not practice the Dharma, then one has wasted the leisure and endowment. The 'Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life' says: 'Having obtained such a leisure, if I do not practice virtue, then there is no one more foolish than this, and there is no one more deluded than this.' It also says: 'When will I have the fortune to practice virtue, but if I do not practice virtue, what use will I be when I fall into the suffering of the lower realms?' And so on, therefore one must strive to practice the Dharma. The 'Admonition to Study' says: 'The human body is extremely difficult to obtain, and having obtained it, one should follow its meaning and practice it.' It also says: 'Having obtained a human body, one can cross the ocean of samsara, and one can sow the seeds of Bodhi. This human body is more virtuous than a wish-fulfilling jewel. Who would make it meaningless?' The sutras say that there is no better Dharma than the mind of Bodhicitta, so one should strive to cultivate this. Second, contemplating the impermanence of death has three aspects: that one will certainly die, that the time of death is uncertain, -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ། འཆི་བ་ལ་

Death is absolutely unavoidable. The first point has three aspects: there is no one who has been born before who has not died; life is conditioned; life is momentary, so it will definitely die. The first point is, as it is said: 'For all that are born, death stands in front.' And, in the *Nirvana Sutra*, it says: 'On earth or in heaven, is there anyone born who does not die? Have you seen it? Heard it? Or doubted it?' And, 'If the body of the Buddhas, adorned with marks and signs, even the vajra body is impermanent, then what need is there to say about sentient beings who are like water bubbles and banana tree cores?' The second point, life is conditioned, so it will definitely die. As it is said: 'Aggregates and accumulations will instantly perish, full of suffering and afflictions such as birth.' And, in the *Vinaya Pitaka*, it says: 'There is no place where conditioned things are permanent. All conditioned things are impermanent, Ananda, do not grieve.' And, 'Alas! Conditioned things are impermanent, having the nature of arising and ceasing. Having arisen, they will perish, therefore nirvana is bliss.' The third point is, life is momentary, so it will definitely die. As the *Bodhicharyavatara* says: 'Even without illness, like today, with food, without harm, life is momentary and deceptive, the body is only a temporary loan.' And, in the *Letter to a Student*, it says: 'Life is like a lamp moved by a strong wind, there is not even a shred of certainty to rely on.' Even knowing that death is certain, still thinking there is time, to counteract this thought, practice the teaching that there is no fixed time for death to come, there are three aspects: the body has no essence; life has no fixed limit; there are many causes of death. The first point is, because there is no essence of permanence, purity, etc., one does not know when one will die. As the *Letter to a Student* says: 'The body will eventually become ashes, eventually dry up, eventually rot, and ultimately be impure, without essence. It will decompose, rot, and know that it has the nature of separation.' And, 'The earth, Mount Meru, the ocean, the seven suns, having been burned, the bodies of these sentient beings will not even become ashes, let alone extremely fragile humans? Life is full of dangers, more impermanent than a water bubble blown by the wind. Exhaling, inhaling, waking up from sleep, being able to wake up is truly amazing!' And, in the *Story of the Seven Young Women*, it says: 'For the body and life that will be abandoned, like dew on grass and water.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
