It is like this, when praised, one walks with an arrogant posture, like planting a pigeon's perch; when belittled, one thinks, 'What poison should I give to this unbearable person?' Some are greedy for food and attached to clothes; some have small inner attachments and large outer attachments; some are the opposite; some have no merit at all but are arrogant and self-important, and seeing this is unbearable; some ruin the Dharma in their homeland, some ruin the Dharma in foreign lands, and so on; some are greedy for power, some are greedy for monastic positions, some are stingy, some are jealous, some are hateful, some are willing to die for money, and so on. Even if one were to speak for an eon, these things would not be exhausted. Now, all those who listen to the Dharma, give teachings, and meditate need to find a remedy for their afflictions. The root of affliction is 'self-grasping,' so one needs to practice methods to counteract 'self-grasping' from all directions. This also needs to be thoroughly decided with one's own discriminating wisdom. If one has the guru's instructions, one should practice intensely against whatever affliction is strongest, such as stinginess. Whatever one does, if it goes against 'self-grasping,' it is not mistaken. If one can subdue 'self-grasping,' one can subdue the three realms and nine existences. The master said, 'Whatever can be given away, whether it is meat or a scale; whatever can be donated, whether it is the tip of an arrow or anything else.' This also applies to all yogic practices related to food and so on. It is not like going to Nyama Lhakhang, but one must practice from the depths of one's heart, from the marrow of one's bones, like Geshe Glangthangpa dedicating merit to hell, or like Kawa Kachen enjoying taking on the suffering of others. Practicing the Dharma should not be done superficially like Rwa sgrengpa; merely recognizing the words is not enough; one needs to integrate the meaning of the Dharma into one's heart and practice it. The Measure of Accomplishment: Second, the measure of accomplishment is threefold: the actual measure, the signs of it, and the witness. First is: 'The measure of accomplishment lies in renunciation.' This means that the initial practice is the stage of cultivating faith, so the measure of accomplishment through faith lies in renouncing attachment and clinging to all things, whether external world, internal body and mind, oneself or others. If the sting of attachment is difficult to remove, even if one thinks it is good, it is considered wrong. As the scriptures say: 'Those who have minds attached to samsara will always wander in samsara.' 'The enlightenment of the Buddhas touches the state of non-attachment.' Therefore, it is important to learn without being attached to anything. All the Dharma taught by the Buddhas is a method to counteract attachment and clinging. The Lamrim (Stages of the Path) taught by Jowo Atisha is also a sequence of abandoning attachment, starting from contemplating death to counteract attachment to this life, to meditating on the two selflessnesses to counteract attachment to things and --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is to counteract attachment to appearances. Therefore, even to achieve the liberation of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, one needs to be without attachment, like this: 'By abandoning everything, enter Nirvana. My mind should achieve Nirvana.' It is said that completely abandoning attachment is something only a Buddha can do. The Three Trainings, Two Accumulations, Six Paramitas, Five Paths, and Ten Bhumis are all methods for abandoning attachment. There are two ways to be attached to this life: the body and things other than the body. First, attachment to the body is like this: 'Because of attachment to one's own body, even small fears give rise to great fear.' And so on, many faults are mentioned in the scriptures. Attachment to things other than the body is attachment to wealth, possessions, relatives, and so on. Like this: 'Those who are distracted by attachment to wealth have no chance of liberation from the suffering of Samsara.' And so on, one should remember the faults mentioned in the scriptures and thereby counteract attachment. Then, there are also two ways to be attached to the future body: craving for a body with specific characteristics, wanting to obtain a good body in the future; or, when one knows that there is no body after death, one thinks that one is falling into an abyss, and thus craving for a body without specific characteristics arises. When the breath stops, one thinks that a body will arise in the place of rebirth, and thus consciousness is transferred. Some Shravaka schools do not accept the Bardo (intermediate state). Even those who accept the Bardo do not want to accumulate karma in the Bardo. First, they want the body taken in the Bardo to transform into another form, while Mahayana practitioners believe that one can accumulate karma in the Bardo. They believe that during the Bardo, one imitates the good and bad deeds of one's previous life, and that appearances are as clear as they were before death. When one cries in the Bardo, the thought 'I am dead' arises. The Bardo lasts for seven weeks. They believe that every seven days one takes a different body. Even when entering the mother's womb, there are good appearances, such as entering a mansion; and bad appearances, such as entering a hut. It is said that the Bardo body can only be seen by oneself and by deities with pure divine eyes; others cannot see it. It has all five senses complete, is not obstructed by walls, and feeds on odors. After entering the mother's womb, because the fluids of the parents are different for male and female, if it is female, it will be attached to the father and jealous of the mother; if it is male, it is the opposite. Due to attachment, they combine, just as the essence of the parents mixes and congeals, and then they faint for a moment. After that, the sprout of name and form is formed. Those who do not accept the Bardo believe that attachment to the future body is the condition for union. If one is born in the Formless Realm, one clings to a part of one's consciousness, considering it to be 'I'. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
