Etc., and always use and meditate on Dharma friends related to the Dharma, etc. If you can't do that, no matter how much Dharma you practice, it's like spitting in the ocean, it will be meaningless. If you write a friend's name and sew it under the cushion, or when a friend visits, the evil person turns pale and says 'satisfied', there is no place for training the mind. Even the general merits of a practitioner will not come, so it is important to use and practice. The fourth type is those who hold grudges in return: even if they have not harmed others in any way, they will have grudges in return, which is caused by past grudges. If anger arises, it is like 'the rope of compassion is broken', so you should always use and meditate on it. The fifth type is those who, even if others have not done anything to them, are disliked by everyone. For example, in Tsang (a region in Tibet), one monk said, 'I have disliked this person from the beginning.' In Kyismad (a place name), someone said, 'There has never been anyone I dislike more than this person.' Like this, take their sins and sufferings and give them your merits. Even with this, it is difficult to satisfy them. All the Geshes (spiritual mentors) like to help others themselves, but they are happy if others don't help them. All the laypeople hope that this person dies so that they can get the inheritance. All the monks think that if this person dies, they will get this land. If you don't use these to practice, it's like what Geshe Potowa (a Kadampa Geshe) said, 'It's like not realizing that the root has been cut off', so it is very important to think about it often. Second, relying on thought: do not think about any other aspects. That is to say, in general, all sentient beings, especially those who have entered the door of Dharma, especially their friends, do not think about their faults, whether their actions are worldly or divine, and do not speak them. Even if you see faults, you should know that they are your own faults and mistakes. Third, relying on action: do not speak of physical defects, etc. That is to say, if from a worldly point of view, speaking of the lame, the blind, etc., or speaking of past ignorance, wickedness, broken vows, etc., then it is impossible to practice Bodhicitta, etc. This is like 'pointing the spear at others', or 'always thinking about the faults of others', which is absolutely not allowed. Second, relying on oneself, there are two types: relying on thought and relying on action. The first is: destroy all reasons. That is to say, abandon all bad thoughts, such as 'this person treated me badly like this', etc., because these reasons will destroy the practice of Bodhicitta. Second, relying on action: endure whatever happens. That is to say, whether perfection or decline occurs, endure it. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If there is no patience, there is a risk of abandoning the Dharma, so there needs to be a way to bear both of these situations. If suddenly becoming wealthy, one might think, 'Now I can do anything, I am better than anyone,' and then start disputes and lawsuits, build temples, etc., wanting to do everything. As the saying goes, 'With oil, everything is forgotten.' Some people, once they have followers and offerings, become arrogant, despise others, and do whatever they want. This is because they cannot bear wealth, so do not be arrogant or attached to wealth. Do not be swayed by the eight worldly concerns, but take them as aids to Dharma practice. When merit increases, it is very important to remain humble. Similarly, if you become poor and fall into a low state, if you encounter unpleasant things, do not be discouraged, do not be unable to practice due to poverty, do not think, 'If things continue like this, where will the Dharma come from?' As the saying goes, 'Poverty leads to the growth of sin,' so there is a risk of losing the Dharma. Because you cannot bear poverty, do not pay too much attention to high and low status, happiness and suffering. There is not much difference between human happiness and suffering. Think that without external distractions, practice will increase. Therefore, one needs to be like Langri Tangpa (a great master of the Kadampa school of Tibetan Buddhism), able to endure both happiness and suffering. No matter which situation you encounter, think, 'If I don't practice now, when will I?' and like adding wood to a burning fire, take it as an aid to practice. As the verse says: 'Like a deva being wealthy, one should not be arrogant; like a preta being poor, one should not be discouraged.' This is like relying on both, learning how to practice easily, suppressing all errors with one method. If you feel unable to practice these, because you are afraid of abandoning the Dharma, you do not need any difficult actions of body and speech. All practice can be done through thought, and you do not even need to reduce a meal, so it is easy. Other Dharma practices require many conditions, such as a place to practice and Dharma friends. But this practice does not depend on anything, whether it is happiness or suffering. If you are unwilling to practice, or if you encounter any situation such as happiness or suffering, you can take it as a favorable condition for practice, so practice is very easy. No matter what the reason, even if practice does not progress or does not generate new realizations, practice as before. The third factor of increase has three aspects: the actions of body, speech, and mind, the behavior of not degenerating, and practicing without bias.
