Consider the faults of whether this arises in the continuum. Recognizing conceptual thoughts does not cause harm; it's like recognizing a thief. Similarly, when afflictions arise, if you recognize the afflictions and their root—self-grasping—as enemies, they will be pacified. Even one instance of mindfulness, one instance of faith, and one instance of generating joy can serve as an antidote. Even if you associate a hundred times, there is no better practice than this. It is said that even if you extract the heart, there is only one pulsating red thing. Third, taking the path without complete conditions means 'taking the three principal causes.' That is, there are three principal causes for practicing Dharma: In terms of the immediate cause, you need to have abundant faith and diligence, so that you can use your mind as you wish, generating wisdom from impermanence to the nature of reality. In terms of the cooperative condition, you need a qualified virtuous friend who has complete instructions to enhance the student's realization, and who can transmit the realization to the student without being interrupted by others. Furthermore, you need to have complete favorable conditions such as food and clothing, without engaging in wrong livelihood and without depending on anyone. If these three are complete, then there is no difficulty in attaining Buddhahood, just like the meeting of Atisha and Geshe Tonpa (Dge-bshes ston-pa, Teacher Tonpa). Now, it is rare to have all three complete; some have none, some have only some, and most do not have all three. Therefore, putting yourself in others' shoes, with compassion, you should also obtain these three causes for sentient beings. Furthermore, practicing Dharma together with others but not understanding, taking vows together but not being able to keep them, receiving instructions together but never having practiced them before, not practicing now, and not practicing in the future—this is meaningless. Therefore, you need to have these three causes to think about attaining Buddhahood. The above is the explanation of the three elements such as wisdom. After that is 'Always rely on mental ease.' That is, you should taste the flavor of Dharma by training the mind. No matter what adverse circumstances arise, you should think of resolving them by practicing mind training, and not be unhappy. Gaining or losing, etc., also happen to Arhats. There are many stories about Arhats getting leprosy, dying of hunger, being struck by bad words, etc., but they do not have unhappiness in their minds. Ordinary beings are naturally prone to unhappiness. We ourselves are like that now. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you follow your habits, you will be attached to your retinue and distractions, and your self-grasping cannot be eliminated, making practice difficult. You need a state of neither joy nor displeasure. Jo bo (Tibetan,尊者, Sanskrit transliteration: Jo bo, literal meaning: Venerable One) said: 'Hailstones falling are not a big mistake, being sick is a big mistake.' Just like that, when practicing Lojong (Tibetan, 修心), encountering unpleasant things is not a big mistake, having unpleasant emotions is a big mistake. Sha bo ba Shed (Tibetan, place name) said: 'My Geshe (Tibetan, 善知识) is unhappy,' making a big fuss over such a small matter. If you can transform the four displeasures of worldly people towards favorable and unfavorable circumstances into aids for mind training, then everything will become favorable, and no matter what difficulties and obstacles you encounter, you will not feel unhappy. Only in this way can you integrate the insights of practice into daily life. It's like the meaning of 'Byang chub sems kyi rta bzhon pa, De nas de bar 'gro ba la' (Tibetan, The Steed of Bodhicitta, Goes from Bliss to Bliss). Also, like the gods, even if you are rich, do not be arrogant and complacent; like the hungry ghosts, even if you are poor, do not be discouraged. As the scriptures say: 'Not elated by praise, not disturbed by blame, this is the nature of the holy ones.' You must base yourself on the precepts and the vows of the Guru (Tibetan, 上师), and maintain mindfulness at all times. If you cannot do this, you will become someone who has no practice and is hypocritical. I will lament that I have not practiced and have been hypocritical for a long time. In short, no matter what unpleasant things you encounter, you must learn not to be displeased and transform them into aids for mind training. No matter what adversity you encounter, you must abide in joy and integrate the experience of practice into daily life. There are three ways to prevent the decline of Lojong (Tibetan, 修心): relying on external forces, relying on oneself, and combining both. First, relying on external forces has three aspects: relying on the object, relying on intention, and relying on action. First, relying on the object means: 'Constantly train in all situations.' Generally, people think this is simple, but if you do not practice in these situations, your practice will decline, so you must always practice in the following five situations: First, if you commit evil deeds against the Khenpo (Tibetan, 轨范师) and Acharya (Sanskrit: आचार्य, Sanskrit transliteration: ācārya, literal meaning: teacher), parents, etc., who are kind to you, you will have a bad reputation in this life. In this case, there is no need for mind training, so you should especially practice on those who are kind to you. Second, when getting along with Dharma friends who are often together, it is easy to have conflicts due to the level of speech, so you should always practice in these situations. Third, when getting along with people who are always competing with you, such as relatives and friends, etc. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
