Similarly, if the meaning of a single phrase of mind training arises in the mind, then all the meanings of the words will arise in the mind, so there is no need for a fixed number and order. It is enough to meditate from where it feels comfortable in the mind. Furthermore, just as the root, trunk, branch, leaf, bark, flower, and fruit of a medicinal tree, each part can eliminate all four hundred and four diseases. Using all of them can also achieve the same effect. Similarly, each phrase and part of this mind training can subdue afflictions and self-grasping. Using all of them can also achieve the same effect, so it is okay even without connection and order, and one should meditate until the meaning arises in the continuum. If one only makes knowing these as the main task, then it is just an empty name. Second, there are four things to be abandoned: abandoning afflictions, abandoning conformity, abandoning hope, and abandoning dependence. The first is: 'First train in the strongest affliction.' Or, 'First train in the grossest affliction.' It means that the root of all things that do not allow you to practice Dharma is affliction. And the root of affliction is self-grasping. From beginningless samsara, all that has put us in suffering is this. Now, if one says 'The mouse is squeaking,' will he worry about having his ears cut off? If a dragon appears, will he worry about being hit on the head? If one says there is an epidemic in a country, will he worry about being infected? If one says a place is haunted, will he be afraid of being taken away? Similarly, some people suffer from fear of bad news, some suffer from fear of not being able to defeat enemies, some suffer from fear of not being able to maintain relationships, and so on. There are countless sufferings that cannot be expressed, and the root of all these is self-grasping. All ordinary people have become the nature of this, and whatever they do is driven by self-grasping, so this must be subdued. Moreover, it cannot be subdued just incidentally, it must be thoroughly trained. If one can subdue this self-grasping, just like curing a stomachache caused by poison, one will immediately feel happiness. If it is not like this, even if one exhausts a skirt and a mule's load, even if one puts a pot on one's head, even if one spends a lifetime in hearing and thinking, in the end one will only become confused and disoriented, without a moment of peace. If one can slightly suppress self-grasping, then the Dharma will become intimate and happiness will come along. On top of that, if one can put sentient beings in one's heart, then that is what is called the Great Vehicle. But this is not something that can be done thinking there is time, one must start now. Take the unpleasant things upon oneself. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you give your desires to others, you can subdue self-grasping (the concept of clinging to the self). Based on this, observe which affliction, such as desire or hatred, is the strongest, and primarily train in subduing that one. Some can abandon afflictions simply through observation, while others may not necessarily be able to abandon them through observation alone. You need to gradually abandon them by meditating on the antidotes. In particular, it is helpful to have a lama and friends observe you, so that you can understand. For example, Chakawa allowed Sharawa to observe him, and Sharawa was pleased. Similarly, when Lumepa was staying in Neu Zur, he understood after allowing a friend to observe him. In this way, in all four modes of conduct, at all times and in all situations, you should have yourself or others observe your mind. After observing, rely on the appropriate antidote and temporarily put aside the others. If you think you have subdued it, but you are not thinking properly, or if the affliction arises again, or if dullness or excitement arises, it means that you have not yet attained the fundamental liberation, so you need to continue to practice the antidote. Even if you encounter bad circumstances or obstacles, if the affliction does not arise, then it is considered subdued. Subduing afflictions is like a new sprout growing from a broken stump, it is easy to subdue, just as being able to subdue a powerful enemy makes it easy to subdue other enemies. Therefore, beginners should first train in subduing the gross afflictions, either by staying in a place with fewer adverse conditions, or by staying away from worldly affairs, or by striving to overcome difficulties. As it is said: 'The wise should be good at escaping, or good at fighting.' It is also said: 'Until you have gained stability, adverse conditions will harm you; once you have gained stability, adverse conditions will become your friends.' Adverse conditions become helpful, for example, when Gnyalpa Josras Kun said that internal competition would actually enhance progress; also, when the venerable Sengge Gyaltshen was in Lang Ri Thang, he became more accomplished and powerful by taking the essence of Se Be Re and other things, but now there is no such thing as taking the essence of adverse conditions, so there is not as much accomplishment. Some people lose their practice as soon as adverse conditions arise, so you must either escape or strive to overcome them. Just like Cang A Pho and Mig Mang Tse Ba, who said, 'If you go there, I will go here.' In short, you should rely on the appropriate antidote according to the situation. As it is said: 'Even if I am burned or killed, or beheaded, I am willing, in no way will I submit to the enemy of afflictions.' Therefore, you should use the courage of the antidote to fight against afflictions. The so-called enemies, as the Bodhisattvacharyavatara says: 'Enemies such as hatred and desire do not have hands or feet, nor are they brave or intelligent, but they control me like a slave.' And so on. Also, desire and hatred, etc. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
