And by accumulating all bad deeds, from beginningless time, generally in endless samsara, especially the suffering of the three lower realms, all are attributed to this. 1-388 From the *Bodhicharyavatara*: 'Your mind wants to accomplish your own benefit, but countless eons have passed, and although such effort is great, it only increases your suffering. All present sufferings also arise from this.' If you still don't regard this as an enemy, and still want to gain happiness through it, accumulating bad karma, suffering for a long time in endless samsara, then now you must also let it wander, regarding it as your own enemy. As it is said: 'This has harmed me in samsara for hundreds of thousands of lifetimes. Now, remembering all the hatred, destroy your self-cherishing mind.' Therefore, you cannot stay at ease. As it is said: 'Thus, for a long time, it has always been an enemy, the sole cause of increasing the multitude of harms. If it dwells peacefully in my heart, how can there be fearlessness and joy in samsara?' Therefore, the object is a faulty object, or the body in which one is born, a bag of pus and blood, a sack of serous fluid. Cherishing and protecting this is like carrying thorns naked. As it is said: 'All the sufferings of the world arise from the desire for one's own happiness.' This thing that brings suffering must be degraded. Once you recognize this as an enemy, you will scold yourself. 1-389 If you understand from the bottom of your heart that all gossip is an act of conquering the enemy and helping friends, then that is the beginning of happiness. The entire content of the Mahayana Dharma is to abandon self and cherish others; there is nothing else besides these two. Moreover, all teachings are for abandoning afflictions, and the root of all afflictions is the clinging to 'I' and self-love. If you can completely overcome it, you will gain great happiness; if you overcome it partially, you will gain partial happiness; if you cannot overcome it at all, you will not gain any happiness at all. Therefore, you must regard this root of suffering and all faults as an enemy. You didn't understand this before, but now, relying on the instructions of the guru, regard it as an enemy. As it is said: 'Where did you destroy me? The former times are gone.' Only then can you be liberated from the dangerous straits of bad circumstances, and only then can you truly become a practitioner who has reached the ground of antidotes. All these are to recognize self-grasping as the enemy. To recognize what is beneficial to others, cultivate great kindness towards all beings. In general, all sentient beings are kind. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As stated in the 'Commentary on the Bodhisattvacharyavatara': 'Those beings who were previously parents, relatives, and have been reborn many times, should be regarded as objects worthy of gratitude.' In particular, contemplating those who harm me as benefactors is as stated in the 'Bodhisattvacharyavatara': 'Therefore, I should rejoice in enemies who, without any effort, are like a treasure arising in the house, becoming friends on the path to Bodhi.' Because without perfecting the six paramitas (perfections), one cannot attain Buddhahood. And generosity and discipline, etc., are perfected by relying on teachers, Khenpos (亲教师, close teacher), and those who transmit the scriptures. Similarly, patience is also perfected by relying on those who inflict harm. Therefore, one should contemplate all those who inflict harm as benefactors. One should also think like this: This person or non-human who is harming me now, from beginningless time, has looked at me with loving eyes, cared for me with a compassionate heart, saved me from harm and disadvantage, and helped me with benefits and happiness, more times than counting all the rafters on all the houses. Thinking of these, one should generate a loving heart that is pleasing and happy. Therefore, the one who is harming me now is confused. From beginningless time, for my sake, he has recklessly created evil deeds, accumulated bad names, wandered endlessly in samsara (轮回, cyclic existence), and endured suffering. All these responsibilities fall on me. Now, for the benefit of myself and others, I am practicing Bodhi, but my evil karma is driving my mother (referring to sentient beings) to create obstacles, thereby hindering the happiness of all sentient beings. Therefore, the responsibility of falling into hell in the next life also falls on me, how pitiful!' In general, one should know that from beginningless time, all beings have been my benefactors. In particular, the one who is harming me now is also a companion in my practice of Bodhi. When I generated Bodhicitta (菩提心, mind of enlightenment), I already knew that I should give my body, possessions, and roots of virtue to others. As Shantideva (寂天菩萨) said: 'I have given this body to all beings to do with as they please, to kill, beat, revile, or use as they wish.' Therefore, do not be angry with those who inflict harm, but regard them as benefactors. If one cannot distinguish between friend and foe, that is the fault of the guru (上师, teacher). If one ultimately cannot do it, that is the fault of the disciple. Therefore, one should distinguish the target and make choices. Shantideva said, 'I am full of faults, others' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
