The exposition of what is not completely fulfilled. The Main Subject. Fifth, demonstrating the measure of mental training proficiency: 'All dharmas converge into one intention,' which indicates that the purpose of explaining all the scriptures and treatises is to subdue self-grasping. Therefore, in listening, contemplation, and meditation, there is nothing else to be abandoned. If one examines the self of sentient beings, it is like a rabbit's horn, utterly nonexistent. From beginningless time, this 'self' has plunged us into suffering. So, are all the efforts of my own body, speech, and mind contributing to its glorification or its degradation? Please contemplate carefully. If it is contributing to its glorification, then it is for the eight worldly concerns, for the fame and desires of this life. In this case, even if one upholds the precepts as a monk, one deviates from the true Dharma; even if one trains the mind in listening, contemplation, and meditation, one deviates from the true Dharma. If it is contributing to its degradation, then upholding the precepts as a monk and diligently studying as a scholar are what is appropriate. Similarly, mental training truly arises in the continuum, reaching the standard of practicing the Dharma. This is like a long yardstick for measuring whether a practitioner is in accordance with the Dharma. 1-108 After that, one should learn to make all the efforts of body, speech, and mind become antidotes to counteract self-grasping. 'Take two witnesses as primary,' which means that some say, 'Jowo (referring to Atisha) is like silk drawn from the Yushu River, becoming soft and smooth, and the Dharma has been integrated into the continuum.' They call those false practitioners 'Dharma' and do not mind the shame of others, which is also a witness. However, this cannot be taken as the primary basis. Why? Because others may only see the good aspects of my behavior, or praise me because of my complacency, so they do not understand my true situation. So, what is primary? It is to take one's own lack of shame as a witness, exerting all one's faith, wisdom, and diligence, like squeezing the intestines, washing them with blood, and striving with all one's might, thinking that even if I die tonight, I will have no regrets. Only in this way can one reach the standard of practice. Therefore, take one's own lack of shame as the primary witness. 'Constantly maintain joy,' which means that from the beginning, one has tasted the flavor of the Dharma through mental training, and no matter what misfortune occurs, one thinks that it is enough to practice the two Bodhicittas (Tibetan: བྱང་ཆུབ་ཀྱི་སེམས་གཉིས།), and one will not feel unhappy. Such a person will not be intimidated by anything, which is also a measure of mental training. 1-109 Furthermore, the desirable and undesirable things in the world... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Based on having the four situations, by training the mind in wanting the four undesirable things, everything turns into desirable things, so that there is no obstacle or hindrance, and one always experiences mental ease and does not become depressed. That is also one measure of mind training. Also, when both giving and taking are mastered, no matter what suffering arises in body and mind, one thinks that what was taken from others in the past has now been accomplished, and again a special joy arises. In short, no matter what undesirable things happen, if one is not unhappy and it seems that it goes as a friend of one's mind training, then that is a measure of mind training. At that point, the antidote is fully mastered. If one can also withstand distraction, then one has mastered it. Just as a skilled horseman does not fall even when the horse is distracted, when the mind is trained, no matter what negative circumstances arise from an unexamined place, such as insults and accusations, the antidote suddenly overcomes them and turns them into friends of bodhicitta. If one does not go under the power of negative circumstances, then one has trained the mind. Also, since one never knows when death will come, if it happens suddenly, I have no other way, I think this Dharma is true and the future is good, and I am mentally at ease. One should be able to suddenly overcome whatever happens at any time of death. If one possesses those signs of mastery, then all illnesses and demons will also become friends who increase realization within. Therefore, saying 'one does not need to train the mind' is not correct; it is only showing the extent to which one has reached the point of being able to fully apply the antidote to abandon what should be abandoned. Sixth, teaching the vows of mind training: 'Always train in the three general points.' This means: not contradicting the commitment of mind training, not making mind training empty, and not making mind training one-sided. First, some people say, 'We are training in mind training, so we will not harm anyone.' Therefore, they disregard minor precepts, do not respect cause and effect, or think, 'If we have mind training, we do not need anything else.' Thus, they contradict the common practice. All of these should be abandoned. One should train the mind with mindfulness and purify and protect whatever commitments and vows have been made from the *Kārikā* to the Vajrayāna through actual practice. One should examine and correct one's actions and temporary liberation in accordance with the *Sūtra Piṭaka*. Second, one should avoid all actions that would make mind training empty, such as sleeping in cemeteries, cutting down sacred trees, going to places where infectious diseases are prevalent, and associating with those who are possessed by demons, such as those who have broken their vows or lepers. Regarding this, Geshe Tonpa... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
