Mind Training Collection LJ6: Commentary on the Seven Points of Mind Training 1-66 ༄༅། །Commentary on the Seven Points of Mind Training ༄། །Preliminary: Teaching the Dharma of Reliance ༄༅། །Commentary on the Seven Points of Mind Training. The source of all bliss and well-being, a priceless body. In the darkness of ignorance of the three realms (Tibetan: སྲིད་པ་གསུམ་, referring to the desire realm, form realm, and formless realm), holding the pure lamp that shows the path to liberation. I prostrate to the Venerable Gold Island (Tibetan: གསེར་གླིང་པ་, Sanskrit: Suvarṇadvīpa, Romanized Sanskrit: Suvarṇadvīpa, literal meaning: Golden Island), whose name is meaningful and supreme. The Bhagavan Shakyamuni Buddha turned the wheel of Dharma three times after attaining enlightenment. After his passing into nirvana, the treatise writers clarified them in order. The Buddha's words (Tibetan: བཀའ) and treatises (Tibetan: བསྟན་བཅོས) both flourished in the world. The teachings are divided into the Great and Small Vehicles. The Great Vehicle is further divided into Mantrayana and Paramitayana. All of these, directly or indirectly, teach the abandonment of self-grasping and the cherishing of others. In reality, there are only two things: self-grasping to be abandoned and benefiting others to be cultivated. Therefore, those who practice the Dharma, no matter what Dharma they practice, should know how to include it in these two and practice accordingly. If one understands in this way, the practice will not be mistaken, and one can learn according to the Buddha's intention. Perhaps some may think, is it enough to practice these two things simply by reading the scriptures? The answer is no. Because of the disruption of the lineage, the obscurity of the texts, the concealment of the key points, and the limitations of the six extremes, one needs to rely on the guru's oral instructions. 1-67 Among them, regarding the uncommon instructions of the Great Vehicle, taking Jowo Rinpoche as an example, he had the instructions of three gurus: first, the instructions he received from Lama Rakshita (Tibetan: རཀྵི་ཏ་). This guru actually cut off the flesh from his thigh to give as alms. Jowo Rinpoche once said, 'Although his view is inferior, he will surely attain Mahamudra now.' This guru's view is that of the Sarvastivada school of the Hinayana, based on the Vinaya Sutra (Tibetan: ལུང་དབྱུག་པ་གསུམ་གྱི་ཕྲེང་བ), and the Jataka Tales (Tibetan: རིག་པ་རྟ་དབྱངས་ཀྱི་མདོ་སྡེ་སྐྱེས་རབས). Second, the instructions he received from Lama Maitreya Yogi (Tibetan: བྱམས་པའི་རྣལ་འབྱོར་པ་). He was a small Kusali (Tibetan: ཀུ་ས་ལི་ཆུང་བ་), famous for exclusively practicing Maitreya (Tibetan: བྱམས་པ་). His view is non-abiding, based on the Akasagarbha Sutra (Tibetan: ནམ་མཁའི་སྙིང་པོ), and following the Bodhisattvacharyavatara and Shikshasamuccaya of Shantideva. Third, the instructions he received from Lama Serlingpa (Tibetan: གསེར་གླིང་པ་). His view is not to abandon self-grasping, but to use it as a condition for practice, which is similar to that of the non-Buddhists. Based on the Vimalakirti Sutra (Tibetan: དྲི་མ་མེད་པར་གྲགས་པས་ཞུས་པ), and following the Bodhisattvabhumi, transmitted from the Holy Maitreya. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These are instructions of oral teachings. This time, this Dharma is the oral instruction received from Lama Serlingpa (Golden Island Master). Furthermore, as stated in the 'Vimalakirti Sutra': 'Looking at the aggregates is the seed of the Buddhas.' Just as a lotus does not grow from the ground or a lintel but grows from mud, the Shravakas who have cut off the moisture of craving do not give rise to Bodhicitta. Bodhicitta arises in the minds of ordinary beings who are bound by all attachments. Therefore, relying on this self-grasping, one can cultivate the extraordinary seed of Buddhahood, the Bodhicitta of exchanging self and others. Thus, this very self-grasping is the seed of the Buddhas. Lama Serlingpa gave this to Jowo (Atisha) as the essence of his practice, so Jowo had great faith and respect for him, unlike other Lamas. 'I have a good and gentle heart, and this is due to the kindness of Lama Serlingpa. My lineage has blessings,' he said. Jowo said, 'From the Tantras to the Paramitas, most who enter this Dharma do not have an antidote.' Jowo gave this as an antidote for practice to Geshe Tonpa. Geshe Tonpa had many disciples, but three were like the foremost of princes: Chennga Rinpoche said, 'First, there is equality, and then one meditates on exchange.' This is the tradition of Lama Maitreya's yogi.' Potowa said, 'When I obtained it from the old lay practitioner in the juniper grove of Radreng, I heard that the tradition of Lama Serlingpa is to meditate on exchange from the very beginning.' Now, the instructions of Potowa are being taught. There are seven points to this: the preliminary practice of showing the Dharma of reliance; the main practice of cultivating the two Bodhicittas; transforming adverse conditions into the path of Bodhi; summarizing the practice of a lifetime; showing the measure of accomplishment; showing the vows of mind training; and showing the precepts of mind training. First, the preliminary practice of the Dharma of reliance: 'First, learn the preliminaries.' As the text shows, relying on a qualified Lama from the lineage of Jowo, one cultivates the stages of the mind for the three types of individuals until one is fully accomplished, generates the aspiration and application of Bodhicitta, and thoroughly understands even those precepts. This is necessary as the basis for this mind training, so it is the Dharma that precedes. Relying on this basis, when cultivating the two Bodhicittas, one should be filled with joy at the beginning of the session. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
